Book Fair slated The YWCA Bergen County Nursery School will host a Scholastic Book Fair fundraiser from Oct. 15 through 20 in the main lobby of the YWCA at 112 Oak Street in Ridgewood. The fair will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday. Books for children and adults will be sold. All proceeds will benefit the YWCA’s Nursery School program, which fosters children’s intellectual, social, and physical development in a safe, nurturing environment. Operation Take Back announced The Ridgewood Police Department will host Operation Take Back for unnecessary prescription and over-the-counter drugs on Sept. 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Residents may bring their unwanted drugs to the front lobby of the Ridgewood Police Department on the second floor of Ridgewood Village Hall, at 131 North Maple Avenue. The drugs will be destroyed after they are collected. The collection actives are supported by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency’s New Jersey Division, the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General, the New Jersey State Association of Police Chiefs, and the New Jersey National Guard. Last year, the state collected more than 9,000 pounds of potentially dangerous prescription and over-the-counter drugs for safe disposal. Adopt a Pet Day set On Sunday, Sept. 30, the Ridgewood Veterinary Hospital, located at 320 East Ridgewood Avenue in Ridgewood, will host its Fifth Annual Adopt a Pet Day from 11 to 4. Twenty-five rescue groups and shelters will be on hand, working to find homes for more than 250 dogs, cats, and exotic animals. The event will include visits from costumed characters and vendors with free samples. Last year’s event drew over 1,000 people, who adopted
approximately 200 pets. This year, the hospital again encourages participants to open their hearts and homes to a friend for life. For more information, call (201) 447-6000. Register for Upward Basketball® Registration for Upward Basketball® has begun. The program is open to boys and girls in grades one through six and is designed to give children and their families a positive sports experience, building faith, character, and self-esteem. The 10-week program includes two pre-season practices and an eight-week season. Weekly games and practices will be one hour each. Practices will begin the week of Jan. 7, 2013 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 155 Linwood Avenue in Ridgewood. To register, visit www.upwardridgewood.com and follow the online registration directions. Upward Basketball® is a ministry of Ridgewood’s Bethlehem Lutheran and Grace churches, and Wyckoff’s Cornerstone Christian and Faith Community Christian Reformed churches. Annual Stickball Tournament set The Ridgewood Knights of Columbus Council #1736 will host its Annual Stickball Tournament on Sept. 29. The event will be held on Passaic Street in Ridgewood at 11 a.m. The entrance fee is $100 for a team of four. Trophies will be awarded to the first, second, and third place teams. Refreshments, hotdogs, and hamburgers will be available, and a special cash prize contest will be held. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Social Service Association of Ridgewood. West Bergen presents ‘Comedy Night’ On Friday, Oct. 12, the Friends of West Bergen Mental Healthcare will host a Comedy Night benefit at the Unitarian Society of Ridgewood, located at 113 Cottage Place in
Ridgewood. The evening will feature Buddy Flip as seen on HBO and Comedy Central, and Rich Carucci, also known as “The Steamroller.” The evening will begin at 7 p.m. with a catered dinner, followed by dessert. Comedy Night is a benefit for West Bergen’s programs and services, including the Center for Children and Youth in Ramsey. Attendees will begin the evening at one member’s home for cocktails and appetizers, progress to another home for dinner, and conclude the night at a third member’s home for dessert. This event is open to members of the Newcomers Club. College Club seeks books for annual fair The College Club of Ridgewood is collecting used books on Wednesdays from 9 to 10:30 a.m. for its annual fundraiser. The books may be dropped off from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at Somerville School, located at 45 South Pleasant Avenue in Ridgewood. No collections will be held on Nov. 21 or Dec. 26. Books should be in good condition. Please note that encyclopedias and reference books will not be accepted. Donated items will be sold at an upcoming club fair.
