Arboretum welcomes new members The Thielke Arboretum of Glen Rock invites all who are interested in volunteering at the arboretum to a Sept. 6 meeting at the Glen Rock Public Library, 315 Rock Road. The group will meet at 6:30 p.m. to discuss opportunities for assisting at the center. Volunteers who are interested in horticulture and gardening at the arboretum and the development of the center are encouraged to attend. Tom Vielbig, president the Friends of the Glen Rock Arboretum Board of Trustees, will outline plans for the fundraising campaign for the new environmental education and visitors’ center. Free yoga classes offered The Glen Rock Public Library, located at 315 Rock Road, will offer free yoga classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning Sept. 18. James Collins, a certified yoga instructor, will lead “Vinyasa Flow” yoga classes from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Beginners are welcome. Yoga helps relieve stress, strengthen the body’s core, improve balance, and more. Participants should wear comfortable loose clothing, and bring a mat, towel, and water bottle. Church holds Rally Day All are invited to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church on Sept. 9 for a 9 a.m. Rally Day celebration. This event will be held in the fellowship hall to mark the start of the new Sunday school year. The day will include entertainment by Zak Magic, arts and crafts activities, and a light breakfast. Registration will take place at the event. Sunday school classes are available to children who will turn three by Oct. 1 through students in eighth grade. Children
may attend children’s choir practice from 9:30 a.m. to 9:55 a.m. Sunday school is held from 10 to 10:25 a.m. On Rally Day, the upbeat Joyful Noise worship service will be held sanctuary at 10:30 a.m. The annual picnic on the front lawn will follow. The picnic will include food, ice cream, face painting, games, pony rides, and more. Note: Sept. 9 is also Hawaiian Shirt Day at Good Shepherd. Library hosts teen events The Glen Rock Public Library will present Back to School Duct Tape Crafts on Monday, Sept. 10 for students in grades six through 12. This 4 p.m. program will help send participants back to school in style with duct tape book covers, pencil holders, wallets, and more. On Sept. 13, teens are invited to Gaming Night from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Participants will play their favorite Wii games, card games, and board games, including Sorry, Battleship, Connect Four, Apples to Apples, Risk, Clue, Quelf, chess, and checkers. Teen Movie Night, set for Sept. 19, will feature “The Hunger Games” at 6 p.m. In the movie, set in a not-too-distant future, North America has collapsed and has been replaced by Panem, a country divided into the Capitol and 12 districts. Each year, two young representatives from each district are selected by lottery to participate in The Hunger Games. The 24 participants are forced to eliminate their competitors, literally, and all citizens are required to watch. When 16-year-old Katniss’ younger sister Prim is selected, Katniss volunteers to
take her place. This movie is rated PG-13. Snacks will be served. The Teen Advisory Board is seeking members to suggest, plan, and help run teen programs at the library. Volunteers will have the opportunity to make suggestions and recommendations on books, magazines, and video games for the teen collection. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 7:30 p.m. The library is located at 315 Rock Road. Advisory committee to meet The Senior Citizen Advisory Committee of Glen Rock will meet Sept. 11 at 1:30 p.m. at the municipal building located at Harding Plaza. Library delivers The Glen Rock Public Library offers free delivery of library materials to borough seniors who are housebound. The library will deliver and pick up books, movies, and other library items. Interested patrons may contact the reference librarian at (201) 6703970 for details. Seniors plan events The Saint Catharine Association of Mature Parishioners will meet Sept. 20 in the church’s community hall at 905 Maple Avenue, Glen Rock. The group will gather at 2 p.m. The fall schedule of events will include an Italian Festival at the Royal Manor in Garfield on Oct. 11, a day of recollection on Nov. 1, and the annual Christmas party on Dec. 20.
