Vietnam War program announced Stanley Kober, Vietnam veteran and commander of Washington Elm VFW Post 192 (Ridgewood/Ho-Ho-Kus), will present “You Just Had to Be There: Vietnam, February 1968 to February 1969” on Saturday, Nov. 17. Kober’s program will feature recollections, facts, and photos. The event will be held at 2 p.m. in the auditorium of the Ridgewood Public Library located at 125 North Maple Avenue in Ridgewood. This program is one of many events planned around the country to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War. Hobbyists to feature photographs The Camera Club of Hobbyists Unlimited will present an exhibit of club members’ photos at a Nov. 8 reception from 5 to 7 p.m. The event will be held at The Stable Art Gallery located at 259 North Maple Avenue in Ridgewood. All are welcome. The photos will remain on display at the gallery weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or by appointment throughout the month of November. The Camera Club meets twice a month, and offers members the opportunity to discuss photo subjects, photo management, and editing. Participants work on a variety of assignments that are presented and analyzed at the group’s meetings. Hobbyists Unlimited is an outreach organization of the First Presbyterian Church of Ridgewood. The organization’s purpose is to cultivate the hobbies of retired men by engaging in ethical, cultural, educational, and charitable activities. YMCA sets School Vacation Camp The Ridgewood YMCA will host a School Vacation Camp for children in kindergarten through eighth grade. Camp will be held from Nov. 7 through 9 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with extended hours available. The cost is $75 per day for Ridgewood YMCA members and $85 per day for nonmembers. Children will participate in daily recreational and educational activities, including swimming, arts and crafts, and theme days. Learn about bats with D’Angeli On Thursday, Nov. 7, elementary school students are invited to “Bats, Bats, Bats” with expert Joseph D’Angeli at the Ridgewood Community Center. D’Angeli will present live bats and lecture on the vital role these endangered creatures play in nature. This hour-long program, which will begin at 11 a.m., is being co-sponsored by The Women Gardeners of Ridgewood and Ridgewood Parks and Recreation. Peas and Carrots will present a musical event for young families on Nov. 8. This New Jersey-based musical entertainment group presents live music programs that feature
both educational and traditional songs. This 45 minute show will begin at 1 p.m. These programs will be held at the Anne Zusy Youth Center at Village Hall, 131 North Maple Avenue. Tickets are $5. Concert organist to perform David Higgs, one of America’s leading concert organists, will perform a solo recital at the West Side Presbyterian Church on Sunday, Nov. 4. The program will begin at 4 p.m. Higgs, chair of the organ department at The Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, performs, teaches, and adjudicates at festivals and competitions throughout the world. He has inaugurated many important new instruments. David Higgs He has recorded for Delos International, Pro Organo, Arsis, Loft, and Gothic records. A native of New York City, Higgs held his first position as a church organist at age 10. As a teen, he performed classical, rock, gospel, and soul music. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music at the Manhattan School of Music and the Performer’s Certificate from the Eastman School of Music. In New York City, he was director of music and organist at Park Avenue Christian Church, and later associate organist of the Riverside Church, where he also conducted the Riverside Choral Society. After moving to San Francisco in 1986, he became director of music and organist at Saint Mark’s Episcopal Church in Berkeley, director of church music studies at the Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley, and organist/choir director at Temple Emanu-El in San Francisco. This is the second of six concerts to be presented as part of the West Side Concert Series. The concerts are free and open to the public. The church provides care for pre-school children. Youth director to address MOMs On Nov. 14, Glen McCall, director of youth ministry at Our Lady of Mount Carmel, will address the OLMC MOMs concerning the faith of today’s youth. McCall has 30 years of experience with the youth ministry. The program will begin at 9:15 a.m. at the church located at 1 Passaic Street. Moms of all faiths and ages are welcome. HILT plans meeting, trip Highlights in Leisure Time will meet on Thursday, Nov. 8 at 10 a.m. at the Village Hall-Community Center at 131 North Maple Avenue, Ridgewood. Nancy Walsh will present a selection of Broadway tunes. On Nov. 15, HILT members are invited to a private screening of a movie at the Cinema 12 in Parsippany. After the movie, luncheon will be served at Niro’s Grill in Livingston. The bus will depart from Graydon Pool at 10 a.m. Tickets are $35 for HILT members. The cost for non-members is $40. Historian to discuss Loven architecture On Nov. 14, Glen Rock Historian Nancy Atkins Peck will present a slide show featuring the Norman style homes in Bergen County that were designed by Carl Kemm Loven. This event will be part of the Woman’s Club of Ridgewood’s luncheon, which will be held at 215 West Ridgewood Avenue in Ridgewood. A business meeting will be held at 11:30 a.m., the catered lunch will be served at noon, and the program will follow at 1 p.m. The cost is $15 per person. The fair will feature great bargains, and admission is free. This annual fundraiser includes a “Garage Sale,” opportunities to win gift baskets with certificates from local shops and restaurants, a Christmas corner, jewelry, linens, books and records, toys, antiques, china, collectibles, and more.
