Fishbein is regional Superintendent of Year
by John Koster Ridgewood Superintendent of Schools Dr. David Fishbein has been named the New Jersey Association of School Administrators’ Superintendent of the Year for the northern third of the state -- and may yet be named New Jersey Superintendent of the Year. The peer-nominated ranking as New Jersey Superintendent of the Year comes with a $10,000 college scholarship for a student designated by the winner. The top ranking in the state will be determined in February 2013. Dr. Fishbein, who has been superintendent of Ridgewood’s school district since 2008, lives in the village and has five children in the school system. He was previously superintendent in Glen Ridge, where he served for 14 years. He is a doctoral graduate of Columbia University. Ridgewood Board of Education President Sheila Brogan said the honor was well deserved and that Dr. Fishbein has done wonderful things for the district. Dr. Fishbein said he was grateful for the peer
recognition by his fellow superintendents. The announcement took place at the Oct. 1 meeting of the Ridgewood Board of Education. The superintendent recently listed some of his achievements, which include making sure the curriculum is robust, rigorous, and current. Ridgewood offers an extensive math program, some of the few string orchestras in the state, language studies including Chinese and German, and an extensive special-needs program. The system pioneered the application of computers to school work decades ago, and remains heavily computerized.
