YMCA hosts Christmas Tree Sale The Ridgewood YMCA’s Christmas Tree lot is open and features a selection of balsam and Fraser trees in sizes to fit any home. The sale will include wreaths, roping, and other holiday items. The lot will be open Fridays from 6 to 9 p.m., Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The sale will continue through Dec. 23. All proceeds from tree sales benefit the Ridgewood YMCA Good Works Programs. Through its Good Works Programs, the Ridgewood Y addresses community needs and strives to serve everyone, regardless of ability to pay. School Vacation Camp available From Dec. 26 through 28, the Ridgewood YMCA will offer a School Vacation Camp for children in kindergarten through grade eight. The camp will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with extended hours also available. The cost for camp is $75 per day for Ridgewood YMCA members and $85 per day for non-members. Children will enjoy daily recreational and educational activities, including swimming, arts and crafts, and theme days. RCB to present world premiere The Ridgewood Concert Band will continue its 30th Anniversary Season with “Music Electric” on Dec. 7. The concert program will include varied selections including “Holiday Fanfare Medley” (J. Stephenson) and the world premiere of “X-ING for Electric Viola and Concert Band” by Martha Mooke. Mooke, an award-winning performer and composer, will also serve as the guest soloist for the piece. Frank Battisti, conductor emeritus of the New England Conservatory Wind Ensemble, as guest conductor. The Emerson High School Band will open with a prelude performance at 7:30 p.m., and the RCB program will begin at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20 for adults, and $15 for seniors. Student tickets are $7. Tickets may be purchased online at www. ridgewoodband.org or at the door. The concert will be held at West Side Presbyterian Church located at 6 South Monroe Street in Ridgewood. Ridgewood Y launches Annual Appeal The Ridgewood YMCA has launched its 2012 Annual Appeal Campaign. Funds raised through the campaign will support the Y’s Good Works Programs, which include camp and swim program scholarships, peer support and mentoring for youths and teens, specialized fitness programs for
those struggling with cancer or Parkinson’s disease, and financial support for family memberships and programs at the Y. The Good Works Programs strives to serve everyone, regardless of ability to pay. Most of these programs, thanks to the generous support of contributors, are offered free or for only modest fees. Jamboree adds audition date The 2013 Jamboree producers will hold an additional audition date on Thursday, Dec. 6. The audition will be held in the cafeteria at the Benjamin Franklin Middle School at 7 p.m. The school is located at 335 North Van Dien Avenue in Ridgewood. School hosts Open House West Side Nursery School, located at 6 South Monroe Street in Ridgewood, will hold an open house for prospective parents for the 2013 school year on Thursday, Dec. 6, from 10 to 11 a.m. Eighteen classes are offered at the school, ranging from special “Parent and Me” classes to five-day preschool classes for four-year-olds. Both morning and afternoon programs are available, as well as “lunch bunch” and “lunch and learn” options for parents who wish to extend their child’s day. Morning and afternoon kindergarten enrichment classes are also available. West Side Nursery School has large, well-equipped classrooms, and programs feature developmentally appropriate activities that encourage individual creativity, learning, and socialization. Daily playtime on the half-acre playground, and weekly music and physical education sessions, are also part of the curriculum. Newcomers set Holiday Boutique The Ridgewood Newcomers will host a Holiday Boutique on Friday, Nov. 30 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the YWCA of Bergen County, 112 Oak Street in Ridgewood. The event will feature over 20 vendors offering a variety of craft items, including jewelry, clothing, hostess gifts, and more. There is no admission fee. Concert series to include The Kennedys On Nov. 30, the Society Café Concert Series of the Unitarian Society of Ridgewood will present the folk, rock, country, and secular gospel music of The Kennedys. The
show will start at 8 p.m. Wine, coffee, and dessert will be served at 7 p.m. when the doors open. Advance tickets are $20 and may be purchased via PayPal at www.societycafeconcertseries.com. West Side presents Christmas Advent-ure West Side Presbyterian Church will usher in the Christmas Season with its Advent-ure set for Saturday, Dec. 1 and Sunday, Dec. 2. The weekend event will feature shopping, singing, eating, and more. All events will take place at the church located at 6 South Monroe Street in Ridgewood. On Saturday, Dec. 1, a Holiday Marketplace will be held from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Attendees may browse arts and crafts at this “indoor street fair.” Coffee and treats will be available. At 7 p.m., The SymphoNYChorus, New York’s premiere symphonic choir and orchestra, will perform a special concert. The suggested donation is $15. On Dec. 2, the Holiday Marketplace will again be open from 9 to 10 a.m. and from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. At 5 p.m., the church will offer a pasta dinner and auction. Dinner will begin at 6 p.m. Contest winners will be announced during dessert. Admission to the dinner is $10 per person, or $25 per family. Proceeds will benefit West Side Presbyterian Church’s outreach programs, including an annual youth mission trip and an adult mission to Hope Village, Haiti. Hope Village is home to Free the Kids orphanage, which cares for over 600 abandoned children. Only cash and checks will be accepted. Novelist to speak The Friends of the Ridgewood Library will host Kathleen Grissom, author of “The Kitchen House,” at the Annual Author Luncheon set for March 20, 2013. Club seeks books for annual fair The College Club of Ridgewood is collecting used books on Wednesdays from 9 to 10:30 a.m. for its annual fundraiser. The books may be dropped off from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at Somerville School, located at 45 South Pleasant Avenue in Ridgewood. No collection will be held on Dec. 26. Books should be in good condition. Please note that encyclopedias and reference books will not be accepted. Donated items will be sold at an upcoming club fair.
