November 21, 2012 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 5 Ridgewood District prepares to make up days lost to Sandy by John Koster Ridgewood Superintendent of Schools Dr. Daniel Fisbein said the district’s schools should be able to cover the days lost to Hurricane Sandy without undue inconvenience or an extended school year -- barring more bad weather. “We had two days built into the calendar,” Dr. Fishbein said last week. “We made up two days by being in school on the days for teachers’ convention (which On Nov. 5 at 1:23 p.m., the Ridgewood Police Department and Ridgewood Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 524 East Saddle River Road. Workers from On Power Energy of Punta Gorda, Florida who were in the area observed smoke and located the home on fire. The workers entered the home and led the two teenage occupants out to safety. They then disconnected power to the home for the safety of the responding fire personnel. The fire was extinguished by the Ridgewood and Police Department Report Ho-Ho-Kus fire departments. The Florida power company workers were in Ridgewood to assist with the Hurricane Sandy recovery. They were awarded a Civilian Life Saving Award by Police Chief John Ward and Fire Chief James Van Goor. On Nov. 9, Detective Peter Youngberg and Detective Douglas Henky arrested a Paramus resident, 24, on a complaint issued by the Ridgewood Municipal Court. Some residents were without power for 12 days, but the situation had returned to normal by last week. The school board also approved supplemental pay at the rate of $39.11 per hour for teachers who will serve as club mentors. Dawn-Lyn Dolfi received $3,911 for her work with the Drama Club, and Lydia Neff and Laurie Pisani each received $2,347. Linda Diorio, Tracy Keller, and Dr. Elizabeth Holey will each receive a total of $508 for work with the Paws for Literacy Club. Michael Lucchesi will receive $391 for work with the Runners Club. Christopher Kearns will receive $1,369 for work with the Green Ambassadors, John Altieri and Jason Porod will each receive $391, and Kevin Blois will receive $196. Jerome Ong, Carol Petit, and Linda Dioro each received $1,408 for XLRS. Jerome Ong received $1,760, Danielle Connor received $1,407, and Leigh Porod received $469 for their work with WPN. Margaret Chanod and Tracy Keller each received $900 for work with the Planet Skills Club. The Ridgewood Board of Education also accepted a donation of $500,000 from The Valley Hospital that will be disbursed over the next five years at $100,000 per year. “We will use speakers from Valley in our health classes for nutrition, injury prevention, health and wellness, and so forth,” Dr. Fishbein said of the agreement between the school system and the hospital.
