(continued from page 3) in the high school and a year as an administrative assistant in the Glen Rock Middle School before she retired in 2011. She died a few months ago. “She used to say, ‘I’m the oldest student who never got out of high school,’” her husband remembered fondly. Mr. James said he originally wanted to donate a bench in the Bergen County Park in Glen Rock where he and his wife had taken so many walks together, but family members and friends from the school and the neighborhood donated so much more money than he needed for a bench that he decided to give a welcoming front entrance garden to the school. His daughter Nancy created the plans and Glen Rock landscaper Michael Tode helped bring them to fruition. Mr. James choked up several times while speaking about his wife, and smiled as their mutual friends spoke briefly, sharing their memories. His son Stephen James and daughter-in-law Cecelia James turned up in parade uniforms with fellow bagpipers Michael Harley and John McMullen of the Tri-County Pipes and Drums based in River Edge. They played “The Minstrel Boy” at the opening of the brief ceremony and a medley including “Amazing Grace” and “Scotland the Brave” at the conclusion. Fellow school workers Norma Klau and Linda Hartman spoke of their fond memories of Virginia James as someone who always came in early to let the students who also came in early into the building. Marilyn Ingulli, Mrs. James’ sister and life-time neighbor, read a poem. About 50 people attended the ceremony. Principal Arlotta noted that new plantings will feature Glen Rock’s school colors. The two red myrtle trees will flower all year, and the perennial flowers will be white when students return to school each September. “The students will be able to sit on the benches and rest in front of the school as Ginny herself did,” Principal Arlotta said. “I know Ginny would have been pleased with that.”
