A little polish can go a long way: The Junkyard Tour
by Lou Faiella On Aug. 20, 2011, eight of our club members went to the Rapparts antique parts emporium/farm in Starlight, Pennsylvania. The proprietor, Dave Rapp, was very cordial and guided us around the fields: all 275 acres. We were transported around in his Lincoln powered Ford F150. Hey, it’s a junkyard! Accommodations were in the parts/tool filled bed. I wondered what crop we were going to pick. There was a fantastic collection of older vintage autos awaiting a new home/restoration and possibly entry in some local shows. There must have been thousands of them! I couldn’t help thinking of how each one was, at one time, a shiny new beauty that someone brought home to family and friends’ approving and smiling happy faces. They were long sought after and equally long to be paid for. They were someone’s pride – long ago. There were also numerous NOS parts in the various barns and other buildings on premises. (Note: NOS refers to new old stock – an original replacement part that was manufactured long ago but never used. Such merchandise
may not be produced anymore, and the new old stock may represent the only current market source for a particular item.) We met with Bill Jaeger, who accompanied us on the expedition. We later had lunch at a local biker bar, accompanied by Dave Rapp who was quite interesting and described how he left the “rat-race” in Long Island, New York about 10 years ago to become a junkyard farmer. He owned Ford and Chevrolet dealerships. He genuinely loves his present work and equally loves the remote location. By the way, we enjoyed some good burgers and some really nice bikes – mostly Harleys, of course. It was a great adventure and Dave Cavagnaro, and Bob Jephson bought some rare parts. Thanks to Dave for driving and to Bob Jephson for organizing the trip.
