Worship service rescheduled West Side Presbyterian Church has canceled the May 19 service that had been scheduled for 5:25 p.m. The service will next be held on June 2. The traditional Sunday service will continue to be held at 10 a.m. Founded in 1912, West Side Presbyterian Church is a community dedicated to connecting with individuals, groups, and families through innovative ministry that supports healthy emotional and spiritual growth. Student mixer set; chaperones sought Village students who will be completing fifth grade in June are invited to a June 8 mixer. This free event is being sponsored by the Ridgewood Parks and Recreation and the New Jersey Governor’s Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse. Students will gather from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Mount Carmel Church gym at 1 Passaic Street for music, dancing, and refreshments. Parent chaperones are needed. Employment workshop scheduled Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church’s Career Resources Ministry, in its continuing effort to provide help to people seeking employment, will present the last of a four-part series of workshops on Sunday, May 20 at 1 p.m. The workshop will be held in the meeting room in the lower church and is open to anyone seeking employment and those who anticipate possible unemployment. Parish membership is not required. Workshops are presented by the Career Resources Ministry, whose members are dedicated to helping those seeking employment. Professionals in the field will present the workshop and will be on hand to give advice. This workshop topic is “Interview, Cultivate Offers, and Negotiate.” Participants should bring a recent resume or job experience information. Anyone interested is welcome to attend. Young artists sought The Ridgewood Art Institute invites young artists in Ridgewood and surrounding communities to enter the institute’s 53rd Annual Young People’s Exhibition. Students from seven to 17 may enter one original work in any medium. Student members of the institute may enter up to two original works. School and independent work of any size is acceptable. All pictures must be framed and ready to hang. Twelve scholarships will be awarded in traditional painting. Recipients will receive free instruction at the institute. Cash prizes, merchandise awards, certificates of merit, and honorable mentions will also be awarded. Entries may be delivered to the institute at 12 East Glen Avenue in Ridgewood, on May 19 between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. An opening reception and wards ceremony will be held June 3 from 2 to 4 p.m. Family and friends are invited. The exhibit will close June 15. Gallery hours are 1 to 9 p.m. Legion seeks volunteers American Legion Post 53 of Ridgewood is seeking volunteers to help place American flags at the graves of veterans on Saturday, May 19. Society to screen anti-racism film On May 18, the Unitarian Society of Ridgewood will present a 7:30 p.m. screening of “We Always Resist: Trust Black Women.” This documentary captures the activism of black women and their allies in response to anti-choice attacks by right-wing organizations through a billboard campaign targeting women of color. Activist and writer Jasmine Burnett will serve as film
moderator and discussion facilitator. Maame-Mensima Horne of the SisterSong Collective will be the special guest. The suggested donation is $5. Club hosts membership socials The Woman’s Club of Ridgewood invites area women within a 19-mile radius of Ridgewood to a Spring Membership Open House on Thursday, May 24 at the clubhouse at 215 West Ridgewood Avenue in Ridgewood. Hours will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. and from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Attendees will learn about the club’s mission and planned events, and have an opportunity to meet members.
Light fare and beverages will be served. The Woman’s Club is a 501C3 organization for women age 18 and over. The club hosts monthly luncheons/socials, sponsors Meals on Wheels, raises money for local charities, hosts the annual house tour and children’s theater, and sponsors Social Service families’ holiday wish lists and more. All levels of players, especially beginners, are welcome to join at any time. This nonprofit organization offers tennis lessons, organized tennis matches, peer networking groups, and professionally-facilitated discussion groups to assist breast cancer survivors in their recovery. Sessions are held at 1 p.m. on Sundays. Tennis for Life is offered year-round at The Ridgewood Racquet Club, 249 Ackerman Avenue in Ridgewood. The group is sponsored by the USTA and EATF.
