Page 4 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • May 9, 2012 Glen Rock District names Albano interim superintendent by John Koster The Glen Rock Board of Education has appointed Raymond Albano as interim superintendent of schools to cover the gap between the departure of Dr. David Verducci in June and the appointment of a permanent superintendent. “I feel excited and I’m looking forward to the opportunity to serve in Glen Rock, which is a very quality district,” Albano said last week. “Most of the districts I’ve worked in have been quality districts, so I know what to expect. I’ve met with the Glen Rock board and they are committed to quality education, and I understand that the students are also committed to quality education. I feel really grateful for the opportunity to work there during this interim period.” Albano is currently serving as interim superintendent for the Hillsdale school system. He will serve a one-year term in Glen Rock, for which he will be paid $605 per day. The district anticipates that he will work three to four days a week and will attend additional meetings. Albano retired as the superintendent of schools in Old Tappan in 1995. He had previously served as an elementary school principal that district. Albano holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from Seton Hall and has taken courses at Columbia University. “For my part, I think that Ray is going to provide us with a wealth of experience and will help to get us through this interim period while we search for a full-time superintendent,” said Glen Rock School Business Administrator Michael Rinderknecht. “I think he’s the guy we need to calm things down,” Glen Rock Board of Education President Rona McNabola said last week. “I’ve seen him coming and going at his other posts, and I happen to like him a lot. He’s the sort of guy The Glen Rock WICS (Women in Community Service) will hold its annual fundraising gala, featuring a variety of prizes, at Glen Rock’s Relay for Life on Saturday, May 12. The relay and gala will be held at the Hamilton School on Harristown Road in Glen Rock. Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature fundraiser. This 24-hour event draws more than 20 local teams whose members complete laps around the school’s grounds to raise funds for cancer research. Several hundred people are expected to attend from Glen Rock and many neighboring communities. The WICS gala has become a popular event with a number of prizes, including restaurant gift certificates, gourmet edibles, retail gift cards, salon services, and much Gala, Relay for Life coming May 12 who evaluates situations and sits down to talk with people rather than coming in and saying ‘I’m here and you have to do what I say.’ I understand that Old Tappan, where he had his ‘real’ career as superintendent, was heart-broken when he left.” Albano’s assignment as an interim superintendent in Hillsdale started in January 2011 and will end in June. He has also served as an interim superintendent in Allendale, Carlstadt, Cresskill, Demarest, Harrington Park, Haworth, Ho-Ho-Kus, Oradell, Northvale, River Vale, and Westwood. The new interim superintendent is a member of the New Jersey Association of School Administrators and the New Jersey Council of Education. He is past president of the New Jersey Association of Elementary School Principals. Glen Rock Board of Education members hope that, by the time Albano’s interim contract ends, they will be able to name a long-term superintendent of schools. Advertisements are now being posted in professional journals and interviews will be conducted over the summer months. The district is limited by the state-imposed salary cap of $157,500 for a new hire of a superintendent. more. While WICS members underwrite the overhead costs to produce the gala and provide the volunteers to staff the event, all ticket proceeds are donated directly to the American Cancer Society. Gala tickets will go on sale beginning at 1 p.m. and will be sold throughout the afternoon and evening.
