The Junior League of Bergen County has announced that Ridgewood High School senior Yoon Jo “Crystal” Chung and Westwood Regional High School senior Austin Collignon will receive the 2012 JLBC Scholarship. “We are extremely proud to award Crystal Chung and Austin Collignon with the JLBC 2012 Scholarship,” said JLBC President Laura Genovese Behrmann of Ramsey. “The scholarship program is a small way for us to thank those students who inspire everyone in our community to make volunteering a central part of their lives.” “We all know about scholarships that are based on financial need or on athletic or academic success,” commented JLBC President-elect Laura Kelly of Oradell. “The JLBC scholarship is different. It recognizes a student’s commitment to voluntarism. Recipients of our scholarship may not be at the top of their class or a star athlete (although sometimes they are as well), but what they have shown is a demonstrated commitment to helping others. Our program recognizes those who otherwise might be ‘unsung heroes.’” For the past several years, Chung has dedicated at least three to six hours a week to volunteer service. Chung is currently the secretary of the Red Cross Youth Council. She has volunteered at The Valley Hospital and Camp Sunshine, a summer program

for disabled children and adults. She uses her talent as a recognized concert flutist to entertain residents of local hospitals and nursing homes. “I learned that a successful volunteering experience does not necessarily have to involve changing the lives of poor children in Africa or donating thousands of dollars to an earthquake relief,” Chung said. “A successful volunteering experience can just involve changing the life of one person in a community. Furthermore, I realized that volunteering does not only help the person in need but also the volunteer himself by allowing him to grow as a person.” Collignon developed a program for the annual collection and distribution of used sports equipment for underprivileged children. Since 2008, Collignon has worked with local schools, club teams, businesses, local newspapers, and cable stations to get the word out about collection locations. He then refurbishes donated soccer balls, cleats, football pads, golf clubs, baseball mitts, etc. and sends them to Armenia, where impoverished children enjoy them at local camps, and to the New Jersey Food Bank, where they are distributed to schools and camps in need. Collignon works weekly with autistic children at P.L.E.A.S.E. Occupational Therapy Services of Glen Rock. Many of his school activities are also volunteer-based. Collignon is a mentor to middle school children and was elected to the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Program, one of the one percent of high school students across the
country to receive this honor. For more information about volunteering with the JLBC, visit online at www. thejlbc.org or call (201) 447-2292.
