Ridgewood
Asian Festival to include March 31 public show
Scenes from last year’s Asian Festival at Ridgewood High School.
The Ridgewood High School Asian Festival will be presented to the general public on Saturday, March 31. The program will be held at the high school auditorium at 627 East Ridgewood Avenue beginning at 7 p.m. The festival features performances by Asian students and friends who are interested in Asian cultures. Many appear in traditional or modern Asian costumes. Dancing, drumming, martial arts, and amusing skits have been frequent highlights of the Asian Festival in prior years. The festival includes Chinese, Filipino, Asian Indian, Korean, and Japanese students from Ridgewood High School and friends from other groups or from European-American backgrounds. Ridgewood’s largest contingent is generally Korean, followed closely by the Japanese, but each group and its fans offer colorful and lively performances. The senior student coordinators this year are Erika Sawada Chan, Crystal Chung, Patricia Gonzaga, Javaria Hassan, Kevin Keppler, Karl Khambatta, Seung-kyu Kook, Derek Sung, Katrina Vital, and Hannah Yang. As always, the faculty advisor is the award-winning Ridgewood teacher Helen Aslanides. The Saturday performance admission is $5 for adults and high school students and $3 for middle school and elementary students. All monies donated this year will be forwarded to Doctors Without Borders, a French-based group that provides medical assistance when catastrophes occur. J. KOSTER
