Glen Rock March 14, 2012 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 9 Council may approve $25 to $100 parking ticket fees by John Koster This week, the Glen Rock Borough Council will vote on a revised parking ordinance intended to reduce the parking problems in the downtown business district on Rock Road and make shopper parking more convenient by rendering violations more expensive. The ordinance was introduced on Feb. 29, and a public hearing is scheduled for March 14 at 8 p.m. After the hearing, the council will consider the measure for adoption. Under the ordinance, parking violations of a general nature, unless covered by state statute, would carry a $50 penalty for the first five offenses and $100 for all subsequent violations. The revised ordinance calls for penalties of $25 for the first five metered parking violations in any calendar year by the same driver, with an increase to $50 for the next five meter space violations, $75 for the five after that, and $100 for each subsequent parking violation. The current fee for violations is $17 for each incident. The concept of a gradual but significant increase was discussed as a way to prevent motorists from viewing the $17 parking fee as part of the cost of doing business. The borough council wanted to emphasize that repeated parking violations would not be tolerated in Glen Rock. The same fee scale would be applied to hourly parking at the same rate of increase: $25 for the first five offenses, $50 for the next five, $75 for the five after that, and $100 for any violation after the sixteenth instance. Those who illegally park in a dedicated space would incur a penalty of $100 to $250, with the possibility of having the vehicle towed at the motorist’s expense. Failure to display a parking permit would make the motorist liable for a penalty of $50 to $500. For several years, Glen Rock officials have focused on ways to alleviate traffic congestion in the downtown business district, which is served by two railroad stops: the Main Line and the Bergen Line. The downtown also contains most of the borough’s retail shopping and many professional offices. Academy of the Holy Angels will present ‘Footloose,’ a rock & roll musical with a lot of heart and soul, on March 16 and 17 at 7:30 p.m. and March 18 at 2 p.m. in Glen Rock.
