O’Hagan earns Gold Award for ‘Run to Remember’
Juliann O’Hagan, a senior at Glen Rock High School and member of Girl Scout Troop 261, recently earned her Girl Scout Gold Award. The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award a Girl Scout can earn and requires the completion of a leadership project. Each girl must discover an issue in the community, connect with experts and community members, and take action to effect positive change. O’Hagan chose to organize a “Run to Remember” 5K run/ walk to commemorate the Tenth Anniversary of Sept. 11. “Glen Rock had the most deaths per capita in the State of New Jersey on this tragic day, and I wanted to bring the entire town together in a positive way on such a solemn day for our community,” O’Hagan explained. “A run/walk brings everyone of all ages together to complete something rewarding.” The event started and ended at Veteran’s Park on Main Street. The Glen Rock Police Department assisted in routing the run/walk course and keeping the area safe during the event. O’Hagan gave out T-shirts and refreshments to all participants. “I had over 200 participants at the Run to Remember,” said O’Hagan. “It was a beautiful day and I believe that everyone benefited from my project. It brought my community together and, by completing this project, I learned
that hard work and dedication can produce something so rewarding.” O’Hagan has been a Girl Scout since first grade. At school, she is a member of the National Honor Society, varsity soccer, varsity winter track, and varsity spring track teams. She also writes for the school newspaper and is a member of the yearbook club. In the future, O’Hagan plans to study physical therapy at the University of Scranton. The pursuit of the Girl Scout Gold Award combines leadership development, career exploration, and community service. The path culminates in an 80-hour leadership project that each girl plans and executes according to her (continued on page 22)
