Mitch Schonfield, executive director of Bergen Family Center, recently addressed the Sunset Rotary Club of Glen Rock, Paramus, and Ridgewood. This guest speaker covered the history and the many services of Bergen County’s oldest family services organization. Formed in 1898 by a group of Englewood women, Bergen Family Center began as an after-school program for 12 boys. The annual budget was $100. Initially known as the Social Service Federation, the organization founded such institutions as the Urban League and the Bergen Regional Medical Center. Until 1968, the flagship Englewood facility was known as Memorial House. Professional family counseling services are provided at the Hackensack facility. Although it began as a youth development center, Bergen Family has grown to include adolescent, elder care, and counseling services. Today, the organization aids families throughout Bergen County. Sunset Rotary Club is part of Rotary International, the world’s oldest and largest philanthropic organization with 1.25 million members in 33,000 clubs in 150 countries. Rotarians offer human and financial resources wherever needed. Members follow Rotary’s first motto: Service above self. For information about becoming a Rotarian, contact Steve Wolferman at (201) 262-5988 or President Tom Shea at (201) 447-4215.
