Registration is currently under way for these fall 2012 language immersion programs, which will be offered by the Language Workshop for Children. The Chinese Preschool Alternative for children ages three through five will be offered on Mondays from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Children in kindergarten through grade three may participate in Chinese for Children. The class will meet on Mondays from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. Young children absorb a new language in an immersion environment filled with exciting and age-appropriate action games, visual aids, vocabulary-building songs, and other activities. Both classes will begin on Sept. 24 and cost $149 for six classes. Materials for both classes include a glossy, full-color LWFC Songs, and More Workbook/CD Set and LWFC Storybook, will be available the first day of class at a cost of $29.95. Nursery school registration under way Registration is ongoing for the 2012-13 school year at Ridgewood Nursery School. The school accepts children age two years and nine months through kindergarten. Nursery school classes are offered three, four, or five days a week in half-day or full-day sessions. Transitional kindergarten and a half- or full-day kindergarten are available. New this year will be an afternoon kindergarten enrichment class offered three, four, or five days a week from 11:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. The school is located at the Glen School, 865 East Glen Avenue in Ridgewood. Free concerts held at Kasschau Shell Free summer concerts are being offered at Ridgewood’s Kasschau Shell at Veteran’s Field, located at the corner of North Maple and Linwood avenues behind the Ridgewood Public Library. The concerts begin at 8:30 p.m. The Moonlighters Swing Orchestra will fill the night with instrumental swing on July 24. This program is sponsored by Care One at the Cupola and Care One at Pine Rest. On July 26, a concert featuring YesterDaze “Doo Wop” will be performed. TD Bank is the sponsor. Rio Clemente & Friends, Bishop of Jazz will be the featured entertainment on July 31. The Valley Hospital has sponsored this presentation. The series will conclude Aug. 2 with Marlene VerPlanck, American Standards & Jazz Trio. This event is sponsored by Boiling Springs Savings Bank. For 54 years, free summer entertainment under the stars has been offered at the Kasschau Shell. Each week, a variety of family entertainment is offered. Graydon sets 50 Meter Splash On July 25, the Ridgewood Parks and Recreation Department will host the 2012 Wibit 50 Meter Splash, a tournament-style relay race, at Graydon Pool at 5:30 p.m. Teams of five participants will be competing for the grand prize of a $100 gift card, a picture to be displayed at Graydon Pool, and bragging rights. Second and third place winners will receive $50 gift cards. The cost to sign up is $6 for an individual, $25 per team up to and including July 20, and $30 per team after July 20. Participants must possess a season membership or purchase a day pass at $10 in order to participate. All participants must abide by the Graydon Pool rules. In-person registration will take place at The Stable, located at 259 North Maple Avenue. Payment may be made by cash or check. Campers learn about healthy eating The Ridgewood YMCA has partnered with a local grocery chain to launch “Mondays with Mollie,” a program designed to teach healthy eating habits to children at the Ridgewood Y’s Camp Pamacka day camp. The program will include presentations throughout the summer by Mollie Kurshan, a recent New York University graduate who specializes in nutrition and food sciences. Healthy snacks will be donated by Whole Foods Market in Ridgewood. “Mondays with Mollie” will emphasize the USDA’s “MyPlate” program, which is designed to help consumers make better food choices. Pamacka campers will color worksheets, watch videos, discuss nutrition, and enjoy snack-sized portions of healthy foods, such as fruits and vegetables and products made with whole grains. Campers will bring home information about healthy living on a budget, and sample menus and recipes so the entire family can benefit from the program.
