July 18, 2012 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 23 Ridgewood Notes Graydon sets 50 Meter Splash On July 25, the Ridgewood Parks and Recreation Department will host the 2012 Wibit 50 Meter Splash, a tournament-style relay race, at Graydon Pool at 5:30 p.m. Teams of five participants will be competing for the grand prize of a $100 gift card, a picture to be displayed at Graydon Pool, and bragging rights. Second and third place winners will receive $50 gift cards. The cost to sign up is $6 for an individual, $25 per team up to and including July 20, and $30 per team after July 20. Participants must possess a season membership or purchase a day pass at $10 in order to participate. All participants must abide by the Graydon Pool rules. In-person registration will take place at The Stable, located at 259 North Maple Avenue. Payment may be made by cash or check. Checks may be made payable to “Ridgewood Parks and Recreation.” In the event of inclement weather, the 50 Meter Splash will be held July 26. Campers learn about healthy eating The Ridgewood YMCA has partnered with a local grocery chain to launch “Mondays with Mollie,” a program designed to teach healthy eating habits to children at the Ridgewood Y’s Camp Pamacka day camp. The program will include presentations throughout the summer by Mollie Kurshan, a recent New York University graduate who specializes in nutrition and food sciences. Healthy snacks will be donated by Whole Foods Market in Ridgewood. “Mondays with Mollie” will emphasize the USDA’s “MyPlate” program, which is designed to help consumers make better food choices. Pamacka campers will color worksheets, watch videos, discuss nutrition, and enjoy snack-sized portions of healthy foods, such as fruits and vegetables and products made with whole grains. Campers will bring home information about healthy living on a budget, and sample menus and recipes so the entire family can benefit from the program. Shell presents free concerts Free summer concerts are being offered at Ridgewood’s Kasschau Shell at Veteran’s Field, located at the corner of North Maple and Linwood avenues behind the Ridgewood Public Library. The concerts begin at 8:30 p.m. The McVey Family and Friends will entertain on July 17. This program is sponsored by Columbia Bank and Park West Tavern. On July 19, Bucky Pizzarelli & Friends will offer an evening of jazz. Ulrich, Inc. and Valley National Bank are the event sponsors. Social phobia group forming West Bergen Mental Healthcare, a non-profit counseling and psychiatric center, is now accepting referrals for a Teen Social Phobia Group. Clients must be in high school, ages 14 to 18, and have symptoms of social anxiety: school refusal, fear of social situations, and limited peer relationships. The group will meet Tuesdays at 7 p.m. for approximately 25 weeks. This is a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy structured group. The first phase of treatment will focus on coping skills, and the second half of treatment will involve exposure. Clients must commit to the full group schedule, which will begin in July. YMCA Golf Outing scheduled The Ridgewood YMCA’s 39th Annual Golf Outing will be held Monday, Sept. 24 at the Knickerbocker Country Club in Tenafly. Proceeds from the event will support the YMCA’s Good Works Programs. The event, which begins at 9:30 a.m., will feature a day of golf, cocktails, and dinner. The day will begin at 9:30 a.m. with registration and breakfast. The shotgun start will be at 11 a.m. The dinner, scheduled for 6 p.m., will include awards, prize announcements, and an auction. The Ridgewood YMCA Good Works Programs address the needs of the community, striving to turn no one away, regardless of their ability to pay. Good Works Programs include Living Strong, Living Well, a strength and conditioning program for cancer patients and survivors; Delay the Disease, a program designed to introduce the benefits of exercise to people with Parkinson’s disease; and Rainbows, which provides peer support for children who have suffered a painful family loss. Center offers summer memberships The Bolger Fitness Center, a program of the Ridgewood YMCA and YWCA Bergen County, is once again offering its Summer Student Membership to full-time students who are age 16 and older. Between May and September, students may sign up for any three months for $185. Membership includes access to everything the BFC has to offer, from cardio and strength training equipment and free weights to lap swimming and more than 70 group exercise classes, including group spinning, Zumba®, yoga, and Pilates.
