Programs offered during February recess Ridgewood Parks and Recreation will offer three programs to children during the schools’ February recess. “Geo-Pop Art Camp” with Abrakadoodle is a mini-art camp for students in kindergarten through grade three. Participants will learn about architecture, design, and color as they make a pop art bus inspired by New York artist Marco, paint “candy” art on canvas inspired by American artist Bruce Gray, and learn about other artists. The class will be held Feb. 22 and 23 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. (Snow date: Feb. 24.) The cost is $95 and includes all materials. Learn more about the instructors at www.abrakadoodle.com. Comic Book Creations, which is for students in kindergarten through grade three, will be held Feb. 21. (Snow date: Feb. 24.) Children in kindergarten and first grade will meet from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m., and students in grades two and three will meet from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. From superheroes to fun silly characters, participants will learn how to begin to create a comic book, taking their imagination to a new level. This class is instructed by local resident Joe Federico. The cost is $20 and includes all materials. Green Kids: Animal Tracks, Trails, and Trek with the New Jersey Audubon Society will be offered to children in grades three through five on Feb. 22 from 1 to 3 p.m. Patrick Scheuer, director of NJ Audubon’s Lorrimer Sanctuary, will offer this program on winter in the woodlands. Discussions will include hibernation, migration, and survival; and how birds, mammals, insects, and plants adapt to the winter months. Students must dress appropriately for the outdoor winter trek for animal tracks and trails. The cost of this program is $20. Call (201) 670-5560 for details. Institute sets Juried Art Show The Ridgewood Art Institute’s 32nd Annual Juried Art Show will be on exhibit at the institute, 12 East Glen Avenue, through Feb. 12. Gallery hours are weekdays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 2 p.m. Cooper presents Words of Choice Words of Choice, produced by Cindy Cooper, will be presented at The Unitarian Society of Ridgewood on Feb. 5 at 2:45 p.m. The program will feature 14 skits, some serious, some comic, featuring stories from the heart. The opening performance will be by Olympia’s Daughters, a women’s a cappella choir that builds bridges between communities and cultures. Participating village restaurants offering fine dining for $20.12, will prepare a three course, prix fixe menu with a choice of three appetizers, three entrees, and three desserts. Learn about Asperger’s related disorders West Bergen Mental Health is offering a series of workshops from its Asperger’s Related Services Department for professionals, family members, and students. The fee for each workshop is $25. Programs will be held West Bergen’s new location at 615 Franklin Turnpike in Ridgewood. Asperger’s 101, designed for the professional, paraprofessionals, parents new to the diagnoses, and others interested in better understanding Asperger’s disorder, will be offered Jan. 26 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Presenters Jeanne
Marron, Ph.D. and Janine Standish, LPC will discuss the diagnostic criteria, associated features, differential diagnoses to be considered, co-morbidity issues, and strengths of the population. Therapeutic Social Skills for Individuals with Asperger’s and Related Disorders will be held Jan. 31 from noon to 1:30 p.m. This workshop will offer an understanding of the nature and complexity of social skills, various techniques and tools, how to target social skills development within the natural environment, and how to implement therapeutic social skills groups for children through adolescents will be examined. Brielle Senft, MA, Jennifer Kunert, LPC, and Gina Buck, Ph.D. will present the program.
Two or Three for One: The Complexity of Co-Morbidity (additional diagnosis) in Asperger’s and Related Disorders will be held Jan. 30 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Individuals with Asperger’s, high functioning autism, PDD, NOS, nonverbal learning disabilities, and other social communication disorders often experience additional symptoms associated with various diagnostic categories. This workshop will review the symptoms and criteria for the most commonly experienced co-morbid disorders and examine various treatment options. Washington Elm VFW Post 192 Commander Stanley Kober has announced that Camille Davis of Ridgewood High School has won first place in the Voice of Democracy essay contest sponsored by VFW Post 192 and its Ladies Auxiliary. The post serves Ho-Ho-Kus and Ridgewood. High school students had the opportunity to compete in this year’s annual audio essay competition with the potential to win thousands of dollars in scholarships, a trip to Washington, and dozens of other awards by providing their applications and recordings to the local VFWs. This year’s theme was, “Is There Pride in Serving in Our Military?” Davis is a student of RHS social studies teacher John Domville, who was sponsored by VFW Post 192 in 2009 and went on to become the NJ VFW Outstanding Teacher

of the Year at the high school level. Domville also represented the state VFW at the 2009 national competition. Davis will be honored at a combined awards ceremony, which will also include the winners of the Post 192 level of the Patriot’s Pen competition, set for Jan. 27 at 7 p.m. at Ho-Ho-Kus Borough Hall, 333 Warren Avenue in Ho-HoKus. Patriot’s Pen is a VFW-sponsored essay contest for students in grades six, seven, and eight. This year’s Patriot’s Pen essay contest participants included Matthew (Dewey) Dowicz, Justine Engel, Samantha Fisher, Noah Frank, Shlok Goyal, Tiffany Laterra, Anna Moore, Luke Nardone, Martina Nodini, Carolyn Pontorierio, Alex Ridgwell, Haydee Rodriguez, John Sweeney, and Anthony Trobiano.
