Chamber to network at video production company
The Mahwah Regional Chamber of Commerce will hold a Business after Hours event for Chamber members and non-members on Tuesday, Jan. 31, from 6 to 8 p.m. at MediaMix, 4 Pearl Court in Allendale. Light refreshments will be served. Attendees will have an opportunity to learn about this video production facility, which specializes in creating live and on-demand webcasts and satellite-delivered programs for corporations and agencies. The cost is $15 for Chamber members and $30 for nonmembers. Prepaid registration is required to guarantee participation; an additional $5 processing fee will be charged if paid the day of event. For reservations, visit mahwah.com or call (201) 529-5566. ‘Music Man’ auditions set The Wyckoff Family Y is launching a search for all roles for its spring production of “The Music Man.” Auditions for actors, singers, and dancers will be held Jan. 26 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. No appointments are necessary; an accompanist will be provided. Those auditioning are asked to either prepare a number from the show or bring sheet music for a particular song, and to supply a photo and resume. They may also be asked to perform some elemental dance steps. Now in its third year, the Y Arts Theater Company has staged seven critically acclaimed musical productions to standing room only audiences. Singles plan Potluck Dinner & Game Night Christian Singles of North Jersey will host a Potluck Dinner and Game Night on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 6:30 p.m. at the Faith Community Christian Reformed Church Barn, 530 Sicomac Avenue in Wyckoff. Attendees are asked to bring a favorite main dish, salad, soup, or appetizer to share (to feed approximately six people). Desserts, coffee, tea, soda, and snacks will be provided. Immigration justice series continues The Immigration Justice Film Series at the Unitarian Society of Ridgewood will continue on Friday, Feb. 3 at 7:30 p.m. with “Lost in Detention.” The second in a three-part series of films and discussions of current immigration issues, this film investigates President Obama’s enforcement strategies and journeys into the secretive world of immigrant detention, with a penetrating look at who is being detained and what is happening to them. The film will be followed by small group sessions with detention visitors who will share their experiences; the members and staff of First Friends/IRATE, a group that organizes detention visits; and representatives from the Sanctuary program, which assists people seeking or holding asylum. The next program in the series, a premier of a video on the life of one of the Guatemalans who live and work in Eastern Bergen County, will be held on Feb. 24. Egan to speak at Author Luncheon New York Times best-selling author Jennifer Egan will be the guest speaker at the Friends of the Ridgewood Library’s 23rd Annual Author Luncheon. The event is scheduled for March 15 at The Woodcliff Lake Hilton. Egan’s 2011 novel “A Visit from the Goon Squad” won the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for fiction and the National Book Critics Circle Award. Egan’s other works include “The Invisible Circus,” a novel that became a feature film starring Cameron Diaz; “Look at Me,” a 2001 finalist for the National Book Award in 2001; and “The Keep,” which became a national best-seller. Park Toastmasters is the local chapter of Toastmasters International, one of the world’s largest non-profit organizations dedicated in helping people develop their communication and leadership skills. Park Toastmasters regularly meets on the second and fourth Friday of every month in The Lutheran Church of the Redeemer. Verismo Opera holds auditions The NJ Association of Verismo Opera will hold auditions for its chorus on Wednesdays, Feb. 1 and 15, and March 14 and 28 from 8 to 9 p.m. at 44 Armory Street in Englewood. Applicants should bring one or two songs to perform. An accompanist will be provided. During this season, singers will appear in the company’s productions of Giuseppe Verdi’s “Il Trovator” on April 22 and Giacomo Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly” in the fall at the Bergen Performing Arts Center (bergenPAC) in Englewood, and other venues. Tenors, baritones, and basses are especially needed. Sight-reading ability is a plus, but not necessary. No prior stage experience is required. The NJ Association of Verismo Opera has been a part of the New Jersey music scene since 1989. The opera company, a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization based in Fort Lee, is the only professional opera company in Bergen County and northern New Jersey. The organization provides performing opportunities for young musicians and artists and sponsors an annual vocal competition held in November with finals generally held at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall, drawing artists from all over the United States, Canada,
and Europe. The company also organizes opera workshops and offers affordable, highly professional operatic productions in Bergen County.
