The community school is located at Glen Rock High School, 600 Harristown Road. Openings are still available in many of the winter session’s courses and special programs. Some offerings available in the winter lineup include art for preschoolers, English as a Second Language, yoga, core fitness, Zumba, Qi Gong, drawing for beginners, portrait drawing, digital photography for beginners, beading, guitar, ballroom/Latin dancing, psychic readings, and spirit encounters. Library offers eReader training sessions This month, the Glen Rock Public Library will offer an eReader training session to residents who would like to learn more about how to download library eBooks to their own eReaders, and a discussion about the differences between the most popular eReader systems on Saturday, Jan. 28 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Participants who presently own eReaders are asked to bring these devices to the class, but ownership of an eReader is not required. The space is limited and registration is required. Call (201) 670-3970. Catholic school plans Open House The Academy of Our Lady will celebrate Catholic Schools Week with a series of Open Houses. These events will be held Sunday, Jan. 29 from 10 a.m. to 1:45 p.m., and Tuesday, Jan. 31 and Wednesday, Feb. 1 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. All are welcome to attend and learn about the programs offered by the school for children age two through the eighth grade. Each Open House will highlight the school’s traditional core curriculum subjects, the Christian values emphasized through community service, the new computer lab and SMART Board technology solutions in every classroom, and the dedicated foreign language and computer class in addition to music, art, physical education, and library. Seniors to hold Potluck Lunch The Glen Rock Seniors Citizens Club will host a Potluck Lunch on Wednesday, Jan. 25. This event will be held at 1 p.m. at the municipal annex at 678 Maple Avenue. Portions should be large enough to feed six to eight people. Seniors do not have to belong to the organization to attend. The cost for those who do not bring a covered dish is $8. Fornatale presents ‘Story of Woodstock’ Legendary WNEW/WFUV disc jockey Pete Fornatale will present the “Story of Woodstock” on Jan. 29, 2012. This vivid multi-media presentation includes rare audio clips and video footage of the artists who played there. This program will take place at 3 p.m. at the Glen Rock Jewish Center, 682 Harristown Road in Glen Rock. Fornatale, one of the architects of Progressive Rock FM in the ‘60s, has one of the most recognizable voices in rock radio. He has been a fixture on the New York dial for four decades, starting his career at WFUV in November 1963 as a Fordham undergraduate hosting “Campus Caravan,” and then moving to WNEW-FM in 1969 and K-Rock in 1989. Jazz vespers series begins Good Shepherd Lutheran Church is celebrating its twelfth season of “Vespers in the Key of Jazz.” The Jazz Vespers worship service takes place on the second Sunday of the month. Upcoming dates are Feb. 12, March 11, and April 1. Jazz Vespers is a worship service featuring jazz music by noted jazz musicians tied to a message by Pastor Roger Spencer. On Feb. 12, the William Paterson Jazz Ensemble will perform. The annual Pasta Dinner will follow at 6:15 p.m. Tickets for the dinner are $10 per person and $20 per family. Expanded WiFi, scanning services available Glen Rock Public Library patrons may now enjoy expanded WiFi service at the library and free scanning capability. The library now has an improved WiFi signal, which should eliminate “dead zones.” The service signal now reaches to all four corners of the library’s main floor. The library recently installed a digital scanner. Patrons may now scan documents free of charge to one of the library’s public iMacs, then edit, save, e-mail, print, or share the digital copies. Group seeks new members The M.O.T.H.E.R.S. group of Saint Catharine’s parish welcomes new members. The group, which is open to working and stay-at-home moms with children of all ages, provides support, knowledge, and friendships while promoting a sense of community. Events for children, families, and couples take place throughout the school year, including programs for moms both with and without their children. Spiritual and social events include playgroups, book club, yoga, recipe groups, and spring socials. M.O.T.H.E.R.S. also is involved with charitable works in the community.
