Ruth A. Down, nee Locher, of Ridgewood, died Jan. 13. She was 88. She was a teacher’s assistant for the YWCA Rodie Childcare Center in Upper Saddle River for 25 years. She was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mount Carmel R.C. Church in Ridgewood. She is survived by her children John Down, David Down, Natalie Franco, Stephen Down, Michael Down, and Paul Down, 10 grandchildren, and her siblings Winifred Turner, Leonard Locher, Clarine McConnell, and Lois Slack, and her friend and caregiver Rosemary Zelinski. She was predeceased by her husband John H. Down, and her brother Lennis Locher. Arrangements were made by Feeney Funeral Home in Ridgewood. Jones of Wayne, formerly of Ridgewood, died Jan. 17. He was 91. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII. He was a 1942 graduate of Western Reserve College. He was the manager of the tax/regulatory division at Western Electric Company in New York, New York. He was a member of Hobbyist Unlimited and a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder and trustee. He is survived by his wife Jadwiga of Wayne, his children Karen Jones-Williams of Medham, Bruce Jones of Westfield, Scott Jones of Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina, and Pamela Miller of South Carolina, and seven grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Barbara. Arrangements were made by C.C. Van Emburgh Funeral Home in Ridgewood. Elizabeth W. “Liz” McMahon of Ridgewood died Jan. 10. She was 92. She was a 1936 graduate of Ridgewood High School. She earned a B.A. from Elmira College in 1940. After college, she worked in New York City as a magazine writer and editor. During World War II, she wrote radio news for the Associated Press, WOR Radio, and the New York Daily News. Later, she worked as a freelance writer and editor, and was a staff writer for the Ridgewood News. She ended her career with almost 20 years as the public relations director for the Ridgewood Library. She is survived by her daughters Laura, and Cary Matzkin, her granddaughter Rose, her brother Evan Wylie of Brewster, Massachusetts, and nephews David, John, and Joshua Wylie. Waldwick, died Jan. 16. She was 83. She was a graduate of West Virginia University. She was a member of the Leisure Village West Kiwanis, the Deborah LVW Chapter, and the LVW Garden Club. She is survived by her husband John R. Nordham, her children Douglas B. Nordham of Boulder, Colorado, David J. Nordham of Newtown, Pennsylvania, and Diane F. Messing of Chicago, Illinois, and six grandchildren. Arrangements were made by Anderson & Campbell Funeral Home in Manchester. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice. Dorothy L. Service, formerly of Glen Rock, died Jan. 12. She was 93. She graduated from Rutherford High School in 1936 and Packard Business School in 1937. She was employed as a secretary for Eastern Steamship, Pall Mall Cigarette Co. and W.J. Barney, all of New York City. She was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church in Glen Rock. She served as a volunteer at Kurth Cottage for The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, and was a Girl Scout leader. She was the daughter of Joseph E. and Mary A. Brewster Lewis of Rutherford. She was a descendant of William Brewster, one of the original settlers who traveled to North America on the Mayflower. She is survived by her husband George B. Service Jr. of Heath Village in Hackettstown, her children Kathleen Service Coffin of Palm Harbour, Florida, Elizabeth A. Service Seabury of Saint Michael, Maryland, and Nancy Service Marosits of Englewood, Colorado, six grandchildren, and her brother William Lewis of Indialantic, Florida. She was predeceased by her sister Anna May Hand. Arrangements were made by the Collins Calhoun Funeral Home in Rutherford. Memorial donations may be made to The Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. A memorial service will be scheduled in the spring. Marion C. Vance of Wyckoff, formerly of Franklin Lakes, died Jan. 18. She was 75. She was a homemaker. She is survived by her son of Michael R. Vance and his wife Patti of Stanhope, her grandchildren Kaitlin and David Vance, her brother Joseph Cooper and his wife Rose of North Haledon, and his aunt Judy Cooper-Robinson. She was predeceased by her husband Richard Vance. Arrangements were made by Browning Forshay Funeral Home in Hawthorne. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Multiple Sclerosis Society. William F. “Bill” Yee of Saddle River died Jan. 12. He was 87. He was a U.S. 14th Air Service veteran of WWII. He was born in Kwangtung province in China. At age 15, he came to the U.S. to further his education and to escape the Japanese invasion. Following high school, he studied drafting at Manhattan Technical School. He was employed as an aeronautical draftsman at Bendix Aircraft. He began his own business in 1949, handcrafting and selling “Ming Trees,” replica Asian stunted trees. As the company grew, he and his wife became experts in the United States gift industry, and were among the first Americans invited to China during the Cultural Revolution to begin the dialogue

that led to development of trade between the two countries. Under the trade name Bill Yee Associates, the company imported traditional Chinese arts and crafts. He went on to revive the lost Chinese art of inside painting, creating a line of exquisite ornaments. He developed a patented innovation of classic cloisonné ware at age 74 and also received a second patent two years later. He was a member of Saint Gabriel’s in Saddle River. He is survived by his wife Katherine, his children Brian, Christina, and five grandchildren. Arrangements were made by Feeney Funeral Home in Ridgewood.
