January 25, 2012 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 15 Glen Rock Local students visit arboretum, meet its namesake Orchard School fourth grade teacher Christine Thielke and her students from Ridgewood recently visited the Glen Rock Arboretum, where the group met Christine’s grandmother, Carol Thielke, for whom the arboretum is named. The Thielke Arboretum in Glen Rock is a beautiful park, located next to the Glen Rock Pool and athletic fields on Doremus Avenue. The arboretum, which is a “garden of trees,” includes hundreds of trees, shrubs, and flowers. This nature center is an excellent place for a field trip or an easy nature walk. Today, the arboretum supports educational efforts as a field laboratory for neighboring schools and hosts events for many local civic organizations. The arboretum includes over 170 species of trees and shrubs. The property, which is a Certified Wildlife Habitat, is also home to a wide variety of birds, butterflies and other animals. The Christopher Barron Live Life Foundation will host a Ladies Night Wine Tasting at the Endless Vine, 823 Franklin Lake Road, in Franklin Lakes on Thursday, Feb. 9 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. The event will benefit Christopher’s Comic Book Inspirations, a six-week program of comic book writing workshops held annually with Paterson School 21 fifth graders. Christopher’s Comic Book Inspirations, inspired by nine-year-old Christopher Barron’s love of comics, is taught by professional comic book writer Alex Simmons of Archie Comics. The Christopher Barron Live Life Ladies Night benefit slated Foundation’s mission is to honor the life of Barron, who died in 2007 at the age of nine from leukemia, and to instill his compassion and zest for life by providing underserved children with unique opportunities to live life and pursue interests about which he was most passionate. The foundation seeks to empower children by encouraging them to earn such opportunities through dedication and hard work. Tickets are $40 and all proceeds benefit the foundation.
