Ridgewood
The Ridgewood teachers’ union dunked plans to play a professional basketball team in a school fundraiser on Jan. 27, but Superintendent of School Dr. Daniel Fishbein plans to lead a volunteer contingent of fellow supervisors and Ridgewood parents. Staff supporters credit Dr. Fishbein, who has three academic degrees including a doctorate from Teachers College of Columbia University, but no trophies in pro basketball, to take on The Wizards, a team of basketball giants in every sense of the world who are world-famous for their prowess, and thus far undefeated in the annual showdown with Ridgewood. The teachers declined to participate as they are now working without a contract, but they donated $500 to the school fund instead. Dr. Fishbein was widely praised for his school spirit, not to mention his courage. “It’s going to be great to see the staffers and parents out there on the court,” said one loyalist at Cottage Place. “Doctor Fishbein is very athletic, runs, and plays basketball. We’ll be there to cheer him on.” “I’ve played basketball -- but not against these guys,” Fishbein said, but he was upbeat about the showdown. “Come and watch me dunk,” he said. J. KOSTER
