Monthly meetings include entertainment and/or informational presentations. The group participates in spring and fall socials, trips to playhouse dinner theaters, historical sites, museums, and more. A $15 membership fee is charged annually. Ziti Dinner set Bethlehem Lutheran Church will host a Ziti Dinner for community on Friday, Jan. 13 from 5:30 to 8:15 p.m. in the church’s Fellowship Hall. Members of the women’s ministry and Upward Basketball will be serving. In addition to the ziti, beverages, bread, and salad will be provided. Dinners are available for take out or eat in. Soccer training program offered The Ridgewood Soccer Association is sponsoring a program for eighth grade boys and girls to assist them in preparing for high school soccer tryouts. The program is designed for players who are not currently involved in Maroons or other spring travel soccer clubs. In addition to training, the program will include playing as a U14 Maroons team in the Northern Counties spring league. Participants will be required to give priority to the soccer schedule over other spring activities. Training will commence in March and continue through June. Registration will be open through Jan. 15 on the Community Pass system at: www.ridgewoodsports.org. This is the initial year for this program and it is conditioned upon receiving a sufficient number of player registrations. In order to be eligible, players must be in the eighth grade with birth dates between Aug. 1, 1997 and July 31, 1998. Library announces closing, programs The Ridgewood Public Library will be closed on Monday, Jan. 16 in observance of Martin Luther King Day. On Jan. 15, the Sunday Performance Series, sponsored by Friends of the Library, will present classical music featuring Kayo Toda on the marimba and Naoko Sawada on the piano. The suggested donation is $3. Book Circle with Pat McBride will meet on Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 7 p.m. to discuss “A Visit from the Goon Squad” by Jennifer Egan. Newcomers are welcome. Immigration Justice Film Series to begin The Unitarian Society of Ridgewood will offer an Immigration Justice Film Series beginning Jan. 13 at 7:30 p.m. with “Which Way Home.” The film shows the personal side of immigration through the eyes of children who face harrowing dangers as they endeavor to get to the U.S. Viewers will follow several unaccompanied child migrants, some as young as nine, as they journey through Mexico en route to the U.S. on top of a freight train they call “The Beast.” “Cliff’s Notes” of a study, “The Future of Immigrant Children,” will be provided. Upcoming films will include “Lost in Detention” on Feb. 3 and “Unintended Consequences: How US Laws Encourage Migration” on Feb. 24. The series is co-sponsored by the USR Immigration Justice Task Force, the Education Justice group, the Community of Friends in Action, the Sanctuary Committee of Bergen County, the Bergen POP and Anti-Racism Committee, and other groups. Church hosts ‘In the Net for Nick’ Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ridgewood invites boys and girls in grades three through 12 to participate In the Net for Nick benefit on Jan. 16. This free-throw fundraiser, which will be held in the gymnasium at the church from 2 to 6 p.m., will benefit the family of Nick Tsiskakis, an eighth grade student at George Washington Middle School in Ridgewood, who was hit by a landscaping truck this fall. Tsiskakis, son of Mariel and John from Ridgewood, is a typical 13-year-old boy who loves to ride his bike and listen to music. On Oct. 11, he was riding his bicycle to school and was struck by a truck. He suffered severe damage to his head and body. Since the accident, he has undergone several surgeries on his skull and leg. Presently he is at home receiving extensive therapy for his head injury. The In the Net for Nick fundraiser is being organized to help ease the ongoing financial burden the family is facing. Nursery school registration under way The Ridgewood Nursery School and Kindergarten is accepting registration for 2012-13. The school offers a wide variety of programs for toilet trained children who are two years and nine months through five years. The state-certified kindergarten/transitional kindergarten programs are available in three-, four-, or five-day offerings. Flexible hours are available with an extended day from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., a full-day from 9:15 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., or a half-day from 9:15 to 11:45 a.m. Children may attend three, four, or five days a week.
