Fyke Nature Association sets trip, meeting The Fyke Nature Association has scheduled a field trip to view the mating flight of the American woodcock at the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge in Basking Ridge on Friday, March 10. The group will meet at the Heronry Parking Lot at 4 p.m. for some late day birding. Participants are encouraged to bring a light snack. Contact trip leader Mike Limatola at (201) 739-8062 or mikelimatola@gmail.com to sign up. On March 23, Kevin Watson will present a photo journey on the Galapagos Island and mainland Ecuador. The islands are a living laboratory of adaptation and survival, with spectacular birds, many of which have no fear of humans. The program will include images of hummingbirds and other species that make this part of Ecuador a birders’ paradise. The meeting will be held at 8 p.m. at the Allendale Municipal Building, 500 West Crescent Avenue in Allendale. Driver safety program offered AARP will present a driver safety program on March 8 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Franklin Lakes Volunteer Ambulance Corps on Bender Court in Franklin Lakes. The course is open to all age groups and residents from area towns. AARP membership is not required. The course will review defensive driving, age-related changes in driving, and how medications affect driving, aggressive driver challenges, insurance discounts, and more. There is no behind the wheel evaluation, nor is there a written test. Upon completion, a certificate will be issued
that may be presented to an individual’s insurance carrier for an appropriate discount in premium. Individuals should check with their insurance carriers for the exact amount of savings. The cost for AARP members is $12. Non-members will pay $14. The program will be free of charge for veterans and their spouses. Roundtable celebrates Leap Day The Hermitage Roundtable will celebrate Leap Day on Wednesday, Feb. 29 with a discussion of the traditions surrounding Leap Year and the importance of understanding calendars in historical research. Participants will learn why we have Leap Year, whether a man really owes a woman a gown and a kiss if he spurns her request of marriage, how many birthdays a Leap Year baby has, and all about Benjamin Franklin Robinson. Light refreshments will be served. The group meets at 7:30 p.m. at the Hermitage, 335 Franklin Turnpike in HoHo-Kus. On March 28, the group will hear “Black Suffrage in New Jersey after the Civil War.” Support offered to the newly single The Church of the Presentation offers Healing Hearts, a support group for adults who are separated, divorced, or experiencing the end of a relationship. Sessions will be held on Mondays from 7:30 to 9 p.m. beginning March 26. Milli Stellatos, a Life Coach certified by The Life Coach Institute and by the Archdiocese of Newark, will be the facilitator for this session. The group will address the
issues of grief, anger, depression, self love, loneliness, fear, anxiety, self esteem, and pathways to growth. Light refreshments will be served. Burke to discuss Irish warrior Robert Burke, an Irish language teacher with the Ridgewood Community School, will present a talk on Cuchulainn, the mythological Irish warrior, and the story, “Táin Bó Cúailnge” (“The Cattle Raid of Cooley”), from the ancient Ulster cycle of Irish literature to the Irish American Unity Conference, Chapter 5th and 9th CD. The 7:30 p.m. program will be held Wednesday, March 14 at Christ Church, 105 Cottage Place in Ridgewood. The IAUC is a human rights organization working for peace with justice in a reunited Ireland. For information, call (201) 384-7911. Oasis hosts Gala Dinner Dance Oasis: A Haven for Women and Children will host its 16th Annual Dinner Dance Gala on Friday, March 30 at the Venetian in Garfield. Oasis will honor the Wyckoff Family YMCA Board of Directors and staff, and will present The Spirit of Oasis Award to Richard and Aleta Taylor.
