Art instruction offered The Ridgewood Parks and Recreation Department will offer adult art instruction classes at the Stable, located at 259 North Maple Avenue in Ridgewood. Watercolors with Lisa Miller will meet on Wednesdays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. beginning March 14. Acrylics with Sandi Chanoch will be offered on Tuesdays from 1 to 3 p.m. and on Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m. beginning March 6 and 8, respectively. The cost is $80 for six sessions. An additional $10 fee will apply to non-residents. Materials are additional, and a list will be provided at registration. Ash Wednesday supper and Communion offered First Presbyterian Church of Ridgewood, located at 722 East Ridgewood Avenue, will begin the Lenten season with a Pot Luck Supper on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 22, at 6:15 p.m. A brief, informal, inter-generational Worship Service will follow. Children are welcome to take Communion along with the adults. All are welcome. Attendees are asked to bring an entrée or salad and their own plate and utensils. Church to host Burnett On March 7, at 1:15 p.m., the public is invited to “Windows on the World for God’s Word,” a program hosted by the Women’s Guild of Ridgewood’s Old Paramus Reformed Church. Guest speaker Delores Burnett of the American Bible Society will share the stories of hurting families in Appalachia, brave men and women in the Armed Forces living in harm’s way, Nicaraguan children with cancer, and captives in refugee camps. Genealogists to host Wlodarczyk Genealogical researcher Maureen Wlodarczyk will present “One Thing Leads to Another: The Genealogy Journey of Discovery” at the Feb. 27 meeting of the Genealogical Society of Bergen County. The 7 p.m. program will be held in the Ridgewood Public Library, 125 North Maple Avenue
in Ridgewood. Wlodarczyk will discuss her motivation for researching her family history, the unexpected and serendipitous things that happened, and how one small bit of information can open the door to more unexpected discoveries. She will also discuss DNA testing for genealogical research. An officer and genealogical researcher with the Flannery Clan organization based in Dublin, Ireland, and a member of the Irish American Writers and Artists organization and the Genealogical Society of New Jersey, Wlodarczyk is the author of two non-fiction stories of 19th century life in New Jersey. Village council nominating packets available Nominating packets are now available for Ridgewood residents who are registered voters and wish to run for the Ridgewood Village Council. Packets may be picked up at the Ridgewood Village Clerk’s Office in Ridgewood Village Hall, 131 North Maple Avenue, during the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., weekdays, except legal holidays. The deadline for filing completed nominating petitions is March 5. This year, there are three, four-year terms available on the non-partisan council. The election will be held May 8. Newly-elected council members will be sworn in and take office on July 1. Employment workshop scheduled Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church’s Career Resources Ministry, in its continuing effort to provide help to people seeking employment, will present the first of a four-part series of workshops on Sunday, Feb. 26 at 1 p.m. The workshop will be held in the meeting room in the lower church and is open to anyone seeking employment and those who anticipate possible unemployment. Parish membership is not required. Workshops are presented by the Career Resources Ministry, whose members are dedicated to helping those seeking employment. Professionals in the field will present the workshop and will be on hand to give advice. This workshop topic is “Create Your Communications Strategy and Resume.” Participants should bring a recent resume or job experience information. Anyone interested is welcome to attend. Clergy Spouse Day slated The Church Relations Ministry of Christian Health Care Center in Wyckoff invites spouses of clergy members in Northern New Jersey to participate in Clergy Spouse Day. This annual program will be held March 7 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the CHCC auditorium, 301 Sicomac Avenue in Wyckoff. Carolyn Custis James, an international conference speaker and author, will present “Finding Your Place in the Story” and “Mrs. Noah: The Clergy Spouse’s Patron Saint.” The event is free of charge and is open to spouses of clergy from all faith communities. Lunch is included. Child care for preschool-aged children is available upon request; RSVP at least one week prior to the event with the names

New support groups forming CancerCare is sponsoring new support groups for those affected by cancer. These groups will meet at 141 Dayton Street, Suite 204 in Ridgewood. A partners’ bereavement group, a women’s gynecological cancer support group, a Hispanic women’s cancer support group, and a monthly breast cancer support group are being offered. All groups are led by a licensed social worker. There are no fees for these programs. For more information about these groups and other services, call (201) 444-6630. CancerCare is a national non-profit organization that provides free, professional support services to individuals, families, caregivers, and the bereaved to help them better cope with and manage the emotional and practical challenges arising from cancer. The organization’s services include counseling and support groups, educational publications and workshops, and financial assistance. Piano prodigy Alice Burla to perform with symphony On March 2, the Ridgewood Symphony Orchestra will present its first concert of 2012 featuring piano prodigy Alice Burla in a performance of the third Beethoven Piano Concerto. The 8 p.m. performance will take place at West Side Presbyterian Church, 6 South Monroe Avenue in Ridgewood. The program will also include Wagner’s Prelude to “Parsifal” and Tchaikovsky’s “Polish Symphony No. 3 in D Major.” Advance general admission tickets for the Ridgewood Symphony concert are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors, and $10 for students. Tickets purchased at the door will be $23 for adults, $18 for seniors, and $13 for students. The Ridgewood Symphony is among the largest volunteer symphonies in the country, with players from 48 different municipalities in Bergen, Passaic, and Rockland counties. The orchestra is directed by Arkady Leytush. This season’s programs have been made possible in part by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/ Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts. There was not a dry eye in the house as he spoke of how ECF would bring groceries with special gifts hidden inside the bags, and how ECF replaced their broken refrigerator. Jones had to quit her job, lost her car, and struggled to pay her bills so she could be by her grandson’s bedside. In another two years, P.J. will be considered cancer-free. One of the prizes being offered was a new iPad that P.J. said he hoped to win. When the prize went to someone else, ECF Northern Regional Director Laura Savage found an iPad for him.
