Page 4 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • February 15, 2012 Ridgewood William Paterson University Professor Emeritus Martin Laurence was recently honored by the Case Writers’ Association of Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur during the association’s Third Biennial International Conference. Dr. Laurence, who delivered the keynote address, was recognized for developing management case writing workshops during the early 1980s Laurence delivers keynote address to CWAM while domiciled in Malaysia as a Fulbright Scholar, and for a period beyond his residency there. In his speech, Dr. Laurence highlighted many of the early activities of the workshops, which were underwritten by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation of Germany. Prior to Laurence’s role in creating these workshops, management programs at Malaysian universities had adapted cases from American and British textbooks and lacked cases that accounted for local social norms and values for use in management education in Malaysia. As a consequence, Malaysian management educators at universities and practicing managers throughout the country formed the CWAM. According to the CWAM website, the association aims to encourage the development of local cases that are “relevant, suitable, and useful for Malaysian managers, officials, and trainers.” CWAM published a case writers’ handbook, which was updated in 2010, and several original Malaysian cases in English and in Malay. Dr. Laurence contributed Chapter 1 to the case writers’ handbook. This chapter, entitled “The Case for the Case Method in Malaysian Management Education,” describes the rationale and importance of developing and using cases in university classrooms. The professor graduated from the Columbia University School of Engineering with a B.S. in industrial and management engineering in 1958. He later attended New York University’s Stern School of Business, where he earned an MBA in 1965 and a Ph.D. in finance, international business, and management in 1972. Garden enhancements First and second graders at Ridge Elementary School in Ridgewood display the beautiful birdhouses they created during the garden enhancements class taught by Ridge School parents Signe Howard and Kristina Phillips. This was one of two dozen classes offered as part of the school’s Lunchtime Enrichment Activities Program.
