February 8, 2012 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 23 Ridgewood Notes Jamboree 2012 is this week Ridgewood High School’s 2012 Jamboree, “No Biz Like Show Biz,” will be performed Feb. 8 through 11 at the Ben Franklin Middle School on North Van Dien Avenue, Ridgewood. The four-night show continues the 65th annual Jamboree musical production, which raises money for needs-based scholarship awards for Ridgewood High School seniors. The show is 100 percent voluntary, and over 100 parents/ guardians of high school students sing, dance, and act or work as backstage heroes. YMCA seeks Volunteer Award nominees The Ridgewood YMCA is now accepting applications for its 2012 Volunteer Awards. Community members are invited to nominate deserving recipients. Each year, the Ridgewood Y recognizes the many volunteers who devote their time and energy at the Y and throughout the community. The awards will be presented at the annual Ridgewood YMCA Volunteer Recognition Reception on March 9 at the Ridgewood YMCA, 112 Oak Street in Ridgewood. Applications are now being accepted for several awards. The deadline for submission of all materials and applications is 5 p.m. on Feb. 17. The Laurence G. Meads Memorial Award is presented to a person from the communities served by the Ridgewood YMCA in recognition of outstanding volunteer service to youth. The Chet Van Doren Service Award, established in 1997, is presented to a person who has given significant volunteer service to the Ridgewood YMCA. A recipient must be 18 years of age or younger, must demonstrate positive character and leadership qualities, and show commitment to the Ridgewood YMCA and its mission. The Jacob Van Dyke Memorial Award is presented in recognition of outstanding volunteer service to the YMCA. Van Dyke was instrumental in the selection, purchase, and funding of the YMCA Camp Bernie property and buildings. The William E. Remington Good Citizenship Award is presented to exemplary persons who are 21 years of age or younger and members in good standing of the Ridgewood YMCA. Award winners must have given significant service to their communities, religious organizations, schools, and service organizations. These individuals must display character, integrity, honesty, and the ideals of American citizenship. Up to three $1,000 William E. Remington Good Citizenship Awards are given annually. College Club seeks book donations The last day to donate books for the College Club of Ridgewood’s Annual Book Fair will be Feb. 15 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at Somerville School, 45 South Pleasant Avenue in Ridgewood. Books should be in good condition. No textbooks, encyclopedias, or magazines will be accepted. The Book Fair will take place April 12 through 15. Concert to mark Lincoln’s birthday The Parlance Chamber Concert will present an allBeethoven concert with a stellar cast of performers on Abraham Lincoln’s 203rd birthday, Sunday, Feb. 12 at 4 p.m. at West Side Presbyterian Church. The Parlance Chamber Concerts features top singers and instrumentalists from the Metropolitan Opera, New York Philharmonic, and New York’s extraordinary chamber music community. In a Hollywood-comes-to-Ridgewood scenario, violinist Tim Fain, who appeared in “The Black Swan” will make his Parlance Chamber Concert debut. He will be joined by renowned cellist Andrés Díaz and gifted pianist Wendy Chen to complete the concert’s trio. The concert will include a performance of Beethoven’s “Violin Sonata in F Op. 24 (Spring)” featuring Fain. Diaz will perform Beethoven’s “Cello Sonata in G Minor, Op. 5 No. 2.” After intermission, the musicians will come together to perform Beethoven’s “Piano Trio in B-Flat Op. 97 (Archduke).” Michael Parloff will guide the audience through the afternoon with informative, often humorous commentary about the music. Tickets are $40 for adults, $30 seniors, and $20 for students. Tickets may be reserved online at www.parlancechamberconcerts.org. All tickets will be held at the door. This Parlance Chamber Concert is made possible by partial funding provided by the New Jersey State Council of the Arts through Grant Funds administered by the Bergen County Department of Parks, Division of Cultural and Historic Affairs. The upcoming session will include new youth and teen programs, including teen yoga, teen volleyball, and advanced basketball skills for children ages nine and up. New sessions of the Y’s Good Works program will also be offered, including Living Strong, Living Well, a free 12week strength and fitness program for cancer patients, and “Delay the Disease,” a program designed to introduce the benefits of exercise to people with Parkinson’s disease. Your efforts help us to help our families in many ways, including sending a caseworker to visit the families at home or in the hospital. This support for the kids, their siblings, and parents is crucial. Kids are welcome to help, too. Many have held sales or other events and contributed the proceeds to ECF. If your Boy Scout or Girl Scout Troop needs to earn badges, visit us in Midland Park. Scouts can get creative and have fun helping our families as they learn about philanthropy. ECF representatives are available to discuss our programs at your next fundraiser or event. Just give us a call for more information.
