Friends of BVMI, a community educational and outreach group that supports Bergen Volunteer Medical Initiative, Inc., will hold a Spring Luncheon on Thursday, April 26, from noon to 2 p.m. at the Hackensack Golf Club on Soldier Hill Road in Oradell. Cardiologist Nieca Goldberg, MD, nationally recognized pioneer in women’s heart health and acclaimed author, will deliver a talk and sign copies of her latest book, “Dr. Nieca Goldberg’s Complete Guide to Women’s Health.” Dr. Goldberg is medical director of the new Joan H. Tisch Center for Women’s Health at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York, where she is also a clinical associate professor of medicine in the NYU School of Medicine. Dr. Goldberg is also the co-director of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Center at the 92nd Street Y in Manhattan and author of the awardwinning “Women Are Not Small Men,” which was later updated and reissued as “The Women’s Healthy Heart Program: Lifesaving Strategies for Preventing and Healing Heart Disease.” She is a national spokesperson for the American Heart Association’s “Go Red” campaign – an association where she has volunteered for more than15 years and served on the board in New York City. Dr. Goldberg’s research and medical publications focus on cardiovascular disease in women, exercise imaging, and exercise. In 2011, Dr. Goldberg made New York magazine’s list of best doctors for

the eighth consecutive year. She was also selected in 2001 and 2000, and in 1999, was the only woman to be listed among the magazine’s Top 10 Hall of Fame Physicians. The recipient of numerous awards for her advocacy for women’s heart health, she has received the American Heart Association’s Dr. with Heart Award, Woman’s Day magazine’s Red Dress Award, and Jewish Women International’s Women to Watch Award. A graduate of Barnard College and SUNY-Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, Dr. Goldberg completed her medical residency at Saint Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center and a cardiology fellowship at SUNY-Downstate. BVMI provides free primary and preventive medical care to low-income, working residents of Bergen County who do not have health insurance or the means to pay for care. Volunteer physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, and other health care providers have seen more than 940 patients in 4,000 medical visits since opening the health center in November 2009. BVMI is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization and is completely dependent on contributed income from individuals, businesses, community groups, and foundation grants. Friends of BVMI was established in 2011 to promote and support the mission of BVMI through community outreach and fundraising and to offer enrichment opportunities to its members. “BVMI has demonstrated that it can

make a huge difference for people who lack health insurance, while also offering a model for prevention, coordinated care, and reduced cost in the long run,” said Ridgewood resident Heidi Ahlborn, M.D., the founder of the group. Dr. Ahlborn also serves on the BVMI board and on its
