Glen Rock
As part of his report to the Glen Rock Board of Education last week, Interim Superintendent Raymond Albano presented a proposal for recapturing the days lost to Hurricane Sandy in late October and early November. The district was closed from Monday, Oct. 29 through Wednesday, Nov. 7, but reopened Nov. 8 and 9 when the New Jersey State Teacher’s Convention was cancelled. The existing 2012-13 district calendar, as approved by the board of education on Jan. 23, 2012, includes three emergency closing days. The calendar also stipulates that closings in excess of three days will be made up during the spring recess beginning with Friday, April 12 and working backward from there. The total days lost to the storm nets out to six, resulting in three days still to be made up.

Glen Rock senior and/or handicapped residents living alone, who are not capable of carrying their recyclables to the curb for pick-up, can now get help. The DPW will provide them with two covered containers, one for cans and plastic bottles and one for paper and cardboard. On collection days, see borough calendar, the DPW will do a special pick-up from the rear yard and return the containers to their location. Residents who might be interested in this service should contact Paula Fleming at (201) 670-3956 for an application. For those seniors in need of home deliv-

Given the extraordinary circumstances of the days lost so early in the school year, Albano suggested, and the board agreed, that it would be prudent to hold a one-session day on Monday, Jan. 21, Martin Luther King Day, which was previously planned as a school holiday. Under state statute, onesession days (days of at least four hours of instruction) constitute a full student day in New Jersey and therefore count as a makeup day. Observances of the holiday for students will be planned throughout the district during the morning hours; staff development activities will be planned for the afternoon. Makeup dates for the other two days lost will be Thursday, April 11 and Friday, April 12. During his report, Albano noted that additional emergency closings during the school year would necessitate an update to this calendar adjustment.
ery of books and other library materials contact Emily Haberman at (201) 670-3070. Glen Rock maintains free or discountpriced activities for seniors, including bus rides to scheduled shopping trips, and discount ticket books for taxicab rides. The Senior Citizen Advisory Committee meetings are a focal point where seniors can express their concerns, which are then brought before the Glen Rock Borough Council by Committee Chair Doris Ciaramella. Ciaramella regularly attends the night meeting of the council and advocates senior programs, causes and interests.
Personnel from the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife required the use of a fire department tower ladder truck to facilitate the capture of a black bear from a tree at 315 Boulevard in Glen Rock. The bear had been spotted walking around the neighborhood at approximately 7:30 a.m. by a resident who was leaving for work. By the time Glen Rock Police Department officers arrived at the scene, the animal had climbed to the top of a tree. An officer from Fish and Wildlife fired a tranquilizer dart from the fire truck’s platform device and the bear subsequently dropped to the ground. The bear was transported from Glen Rock via pickup truck; it was reportedly going to be released in Ringwood. (Photo courtesy of Boyd A. Loving.)
