Shakespeare Garden dedicated to McCarthy
The Shakespeare Garden at Glen Rock High School was recently dedicated to former principal James McCarthy. McCarthy, who served as principal of GRHS from the 2001-02 school year to 2010-11, retired on July 15, 2011. GRHS has a tradition of honoring past principals through a lasting tribute in the school’s center courtyard. Many staff members attended the event, which included comments by GRHS Principal John Arlotta and Director of Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Kathleen Regan, and a poetry reading by GRHS English Department Chair Patricia Mahoney. Students were involved in the planning and preparation of the garden under the direction of high school science teacher Heather McDermott. Additional plantings are scheduled for the spring. McCarthy appears next to the garden’s commemorative plaque, which carries one of his favorite quotations, ‘What a sculpture is to a block of marble, education is to a human soul.’ -- Joseph Addison.
