Health department offers Zumba classes The Village of Ridgewood Health Department is offering a six-session Zumba program at the Anne Zusy Youth Center, 131 North Maple Avenue. Classes will meet at 4:45 p.m. on Dec. 4, 11, and 18, and Jan. 8, 15, and 22. The fee for the six-week session is $48. This program is open to area residents. Employment workshop scheduled Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church’s Career Resources Ministry, in its continuing effort to provide help to people seeking employment, will present the fourth of a four-part series of workshops on Sunday, Dec. 9 at 1 p.m. The workshop will be held in the meeting room in the lower church and is open to anyone seeking employment and those who anticipate possible unemployment. Parish membership is not required. Workshops are presented by the Career Resources Ministry, whose members are dedicated to helping those seeking employment. Professionals in the field will present the workshop and will be on hand to give advice. This workshop topic is “Interview, Cultivate Offers, and Negotiate.” Participants should bring a recent resume or job experience information. Anyone interested is welcome to attend. Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church is located at 1 Passaic Street in Ridgewood. ‘Marcia the Musical Moose’ comes to Ridgewood The Ridgewood Parks and Recreation Department has invited Marcia the Musical Moose to entertain preschool and early elementary children during the holiday recess. The show will be held Dec. 27 in the Anne Zusy Youth Center, 131 North Maple Avenue, at 11 a.m. In a nutshell (as Marcia’s friend Sally the Squirrel puts it), the variety show includes music, sing-alongs, silly magic, puppets, and audience participation. Tickets are $5 for children age two and older. Tickets may be purchased in advance at the recreation office located at the Stable, 259 North Maple Avenue, weekdays between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Seating is limited. Children offered Architecture Art Camp The Ridgewood Parks and Recreation Department will present Architecture Art Camp by Abrakadoodle on Dec. 26 and 27. This special enrichment camp is open to children in grades one through four and will be held at The Stable, 259 North Maple Avenue in Ridgewood. The art camp is scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to noon each day, and will offer children an opportunity to discover the world of architecture. Participants will build balancing towers, sculpt Greek columns, and draw and design whimsical skyscrapers inspired by Brooklyn, New York native and pop artist James Rizzi. Holiday donations sought The Ridgewood Parks and Recreation Department is seeking donations of toys, gloves, scarves, hats, mittens, and non-perishable food items for the needy. Donations may be brought to the Stable at 259 North Maple Avenue in Ridgewood weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through Dec. 19. The Stable is also a collection site for Toys for Tots and for Mitten Tree. Toys for Tots is sponsored by the Saddle River Detachment #1211 Marine Corps League. Area residents are invited to bring new, unwrapped toys and games to make a child’s holiday a little brighter. The “Mitten Tree,” which is sponsored in conjunction with the Social Services Association of Ridgewood and Vicinity, is annually decorated with gloves, scarves, hats, and mittens donated by local residents to benefit neighbors. Donations of non-perishable food items, including canned tuna, boxed cereal, pasta, rice, canned juices, vegetables, soup, canned fruit, toilet paper, soap, shampoo, and detergent are welcome. Cookie Concert for Children planned The third annual Cookie Concert for Children will be held on Sunday, Dec. 16 in the sanctuary of Ridgewood’s Old Paramus Reformed Church, 660 East Glen Avenue in Ridgewood. This family concert will begin at 3 p.m. and is open to all. OPRC Music Director Stewart Holmes will present a discussion about the “king” of instruments, the Nevin pipe organ. He will also play seasonal selections. In addition to pieces that appeal to children, there will be interactive participation demonstrating how the pipe organ works. Ridge School Music Specialist John Schmarak will be the guest trumpet player. Following the 45-minute concert, cookies will be served. Winter Bereavement Group forming The parishes of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Saint Gabriel, and Saint Catharine will jointly sponsor a Winter Bereavement Support Group that will meet on Tuesdays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. The program will be held at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, located at 1 Passaic Street in Ridgewood, from Jan. 8 through March 5. Meetings will offer support to those going through the grieving process. The group stresses confidentiality and is open to all. Foley to exhibit Throughout the month of December, the Stable Art Gallery will be presenting “Upstairs, Downstairs: Realism to Abstraction” by artist Janis Foley. Foley’s exhibit is presented in two styles. The upstairs portion of the show will highlight traditional style and include portraits, still lifes, and landscapes in mixed media, including watercolors, oils, pastels, and ink. The downstairs gallery will showcase more recent abstract and semi-abstract designs. These works reflect an emphasis on shapes and edges, textures and value patterns on a flat plane in oil, watercolor, collage, and acrylic. The Stable Art Gallery is located at 259 North Maple Avenue.
