Tryouts are open to all swimmers ages six and older. The Breakers Swim Team is for participants at all ability levels, and provides youths the opportunity to acquire the skills, self-discipline, confidence, and physical conditioning to become the best swimmers they can be. Art classes offered The Ridgewood Parks and Recreation Department will offer art instruction for adults at the Stable, 259 North Maple Avenue in Ridgewood. Watercolors with Lisa Miller will meet on Wednesday from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. beginning Sept. 19. The cost is $95 for six classes. Acrylics with Sandi Chanoch will be offered in two sessions: Tuesdays from 1 to 3 p.m., and an evening class on Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m. These classes will begin Sept. 18 and 20, respectively. The cost is $80 for the six classes. Materials for the classes are additional, and a list will be provided at registration. An additional $10 registration fee will apply to non-residents. These classes are offered by the Ridgewood Parks and Recreation Department. Youth participants may choose from Thursday or Friday classes, which begin Sept. 6 and 7. Sessions will meet as follows: Children in first and second grade, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.; students in third and fourth grades, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.; students in fifth and sixth grades; and those in grade seven and up from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Adult classes will be held on Fridays beginning Sept. 7. Sessions will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. or from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. The fee for each six-week session is $115. All rain cancellations will be made up. Club plans Summer Social The Woman’s Club of Ridgewood will host its Summer Social on Tuesday, Aug. 28 from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Area women who are interested in learning more about this organization are invited. KinderKickers players wanted Registration is now open for 2012 Fall KinderKickers, an introductory soccer program for Ridgewood boys and girls, ages four and five, who are in preschool and kindergarten. Coordinated by the Ridgewood Soccer Association, the program acquaints children with basic soccer skills while emphasizing the enjoyable aspects of the game. Weekly sessions introduce soccer-oriented games and teach basic soccer skills in a non-competitive environment. The program is led by professional trainers, who focus on having fun and promoting physical fitness. The program will be held on eight Saturdays beginning Sept. 8. Schedules with starting times will be posted on the Ridgewood Soccer Association website after Labor Day. The cost is $100 per player and includes an official team jersey and soccer ball. Attendees should wear shin guards, sneakers or cleats, which are available for purchase at most local sporting goods stores. Participants should also bring a water bottle to each session. KinderKickers, jointly sponsored by Ridgewood Soccer Association and the Maroons Soccer Club, is coordinated each fall by the Ridgewood Soccer Association and presented each spring by the Maroons Soccer Club. Male voices sought for chorus The Orpheus Club Men’s Chorus will begin rehearsals on Sept. 5 and invites all men who like to sing to join one of New Jersey’s oldest and best musical groups. The Orpheus Club Men’s Chorus meets each Wednesday at 8 p.m. at The Cupola (Care One) on East Ridgewood Avenue in Paramus. Founded in 1909, the chorus presents concerts featuring a wide variety of music including classics, pop tunes, oldies, music from Broadway shows, and novelty tunes. Concerts are presented in December and April at the United Methodist Church in Ridgewood. The group also sings at other events in northern New Jersey. Formal musical training is not needed for membership in this chorus. Auditions are not required, although members are occasionally tested to see which part or musical selection is most appropriate for their skills. Nobel Prize winner to discuss global warming The North Jersey Public Policy Network Distinguished Expert Series will present a talk by Dr. Kevin Trenberth, senior scientist for the National Center for Atmospheric Research, climate analysis section, on Friday, Aug. 31 at 7:30 p.m. Dr. Trenberth’s program, “Global Warming: The Future Outlook,” will take place at the Ridgewood Public Library, 125 North Maple Avenue in Ridgewood. Dr. Trenberth will discuss his observations and the science of climate change caused by human activity, the potential environmental and socio-economic consequences, and options for adapting to or mitigating the effects of climate change. A question and answer session will follow. Dr. Trenberth led the intergovernmental panel on climate change to win the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for the Scientific Assessment of Climate Change Reports. He is a Fellow of the American Meteorological Society and the American Association for Advancement of Science and the American Geophysical Union. West Bergen Mental Health sponsors contest West Bergen Mental Healthcare, a non-profit counseling and psychiatric center located in Ridgewood, recently announced its Fifth Annual Super Cash Prize contest. Five hundred tickets are expected to be sold at $50 per ticket. First prize will be 25 percent of the total proceeds, second prize will be 15 percent, and third prize will be 10 percent. The winners will be announced at A Fall Night of Fine Dining, which will be held Nov. 5 at the Indian Trail Club in Franklin Lakes. Participants need not be present to win. All funds raised from the contest will benefit the programs and services of West Bergen, including the Center for Children and Youth in Ramsey, which provides counseling, therapy, and addiction treatment services for young people, ages two through 18, and their parents.
