The Ridgewood Concert Band, which has been bringing outstanding music to northern New Jersey for 30 years, has announced its upcoming concert season. Programs will feature high-caliber guest soloists, guest conductors, and the world premiere of a new composition. The RCB is an ensemble comprised of musicians from northern New Jersey and surrounding areas. The group performs a wide variety of musical selections from familiar marches to newly written pieces for wind ensemble. Highlights of the 2012-13 season will include the Oct. 26 opening concert, “Salute to Our Nation’s Veterans.” The program will feature the Rutgers University Symphony Band, and guest soloist Jason Ham (euphonium, United States Military Academy Band). Special guests will include John Philip Sousa IV and Francis Scott Key IV. Guest Conductor Frank Battisti and soloist Martha Mooke (electric viola) will join the RCB for “Music Electric” on Dec. 7. This concert will include a world premiere of a composition for electric viola and concert band. “Freedom Rings” will be performed Feb. 1, 2013 with
Sam Kaestner (bass clarinet, U.S. Military Academy Band) and Guest Conductor Ed Lisk. Dr. Gareth Icenogle will serve as guest narrator for Aaron Copland’s “A Lincoln Portrait.” On April 5, guest soloist Paul Van Ness (piano) will perform Stravinsky’s “Concerto for Piano and Winds.” Michael Parloff will serve as guest conductor of this program. RCB will close the season on May 10, 2013, when the band will be joined by talented local high school musicians in the Fifth Annual Side-by-Side Concert. This program will feature guest soloist Rufus Reid, composer and bass player.
Rabbi David J. Fine, PhD, spiritual leader of Temple Israel and JCC in Ridgewood, will be the featured speaker at a Publication Party to celebrate his new book, and chapters he wrote in a recently published volume from the Rabbinical Assembly, the international professional association of Conservative rabbis. The gathering is slated for Sunday, Sept. 9 from 10:30 to noon at the synagogue at 475 Grove Street in Ridgewood. Rabbi Fine, a historian, will read excerpts from his groundbreaking work, “Jewish Integration in the German Army in the First World War,” and his two chapters, “Taxation” and “Marriage,” in “The Observant Life,” a comprehensive guide for Jewish living today, as understood by the Conservative branch of Judaism. In “Jewish Integration in the German Army,” through letters from the front, diaries, memoirs, tombstone inscriptions, photographs, military service records, and more, Rabbi Fine offers a compelling portrait of Jewish officers serving as proud Germans. His argument leads to the startling conclusion that anti-Semitism was not a primary factor in their WWI wartime experience. Must citizens pay taxes under any circumstances?
