Glen Rock August 22, 2012 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 3 Business owners cope during Rock Road track repairs by John Koster Although Rock Road in Glen Rock has been closed to through traffic due to New Jersey Transit’s railroad track repairs, most local business owners have been taking the project in stride. “It’s hard to say. So far, so good,” said Gino Paolucci, of Glen Rock Hardware and Paint, just a few doors from the track repairs. “They were really fast. They got the track up and the trains running in just a few days. It was a very efficient feat of construction.” Paolucci observed that most of his paint and hardware customers are managing to find a way to get to his store, generally by using the Rodney Street detour off Maple Avenue, and making a U-turn in his parking lot after buying what they need. He said that whatever impact he feels is in his secondary operation, buying crockery and bric-a-brac from businesses that have closed and displaying these items in his front window. The tellers at the Glen Rock Savings Bank, the last building on Rock Road before the tracks, reported that customers have not been deterred at all from using the bank. Valerie Mendonca, who operates the custom framing shop two doors up the street from the bank, said the impact on her business was nil. “I was on vacation for a week, and when I came back I found that people were pining to come in,” Mendonca said last week. “There has been no trouble at all for my business.” Matt Kopaci of Rock Ridge Pharmacy, the key store on the block nearest the track work, said there had been some impact, but most of his customers seem to have read the announcements and seen the signs in time to arrange detours. “I myself had a habit problem,” Kopaci admitted. “It took a couple of days for me “It takes hands to build a house, but only hearts As one of the most efficient can build a home.” banks in America, Hudson City — Unknown provides better values in the form of competitive mortgage rates and lower closing fees. The customers have been very good about it.” Farther up Rock Road, just outside at the entrance to the posted area, Paul Duggan of Mail & More said he still has a steady flow of customers and that the late August season probably has more to do with slow business than the road closure. “I’ve noticed some change, but since this is August, it hasn’t been serious,” Duggan said last week. “We have customers. I’m delighted to see that many of our Ridgewood customers are still finding a way to come here.” At the head of Rock Road, Karl Sewall, owner-operator of Maple Rock Exxon, said his business has been steady. “It didn’t really affect us because we’re right on the main road,” Sewall said, referring to Maple Avenue. Glen Rock Police Department sources also said there have been few complaints and that people are behaving responsibly during the track project. Everyone concerned, however, was pleased to hear that the railroad construction was slated for completion by the end of this week and that Rock Road should be back to normal by September.
