Commission seeks aid with tree care The Glen Rock Shade Tree Advisory Committee is seeking residents’ assistance with the watering of its newly planted trees. With record-high temperatures and scant rainfall, the commission is requesting borough residents to water these new plantings throughout the summer and fall. The commission offers the following tips: Trees need 15 to 20 gallons of water per week, especially young trees planted in the past three years. Trees should be watered slowly, as the water needs to penetrate the soil rather than run off the surface soil. A mulch donut may be built around the tree’s base to capture and hold water. Don’t waste time watering a tree’s branches and leaves; the tree’s root system that needs the water most. For more information about watering trees, or to request a free tree, contact the department of public works at (201) 670-3980 or e-mail GlenRockTreeTrust@gmail. com. Forms may be obtained online at www.glenrocknj. net/departments on the Shade Tree Advisory Committee page. Traffic ordinance
(continued from page 7) ordinances would be understood by motorists. Ridgewood Village Attorney Matt Rogers said the changes Loving suggested, and the Ridgewood officials accepted, were not substantive enough to require reintroduction and re-advertisement of the ordinance. The measure, including the updates, was subsequently adopted. The ordinance prohibits left turns on Bedford Road for motorists heading east at the intersection of Morningside Road from Sept. 1 through June 30 -- instead of on “school days,” as originally drafted. Turns will be prohibited at that intersection from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 2:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Loving instituted the change in wording and convinced Chief Ward and the others that motorists might become confused about whether they could turn left on Bedford during the Christmas holidays and winter and spring breaks when the schools are closed. The ordinance also prohibits left turns for motorists heading east on West Ridgewood Avenue at the intersection of North Hillside Place “Monday through Friday” -instead of “Sept. 1 through June 30” as originally drafted -- because, as Chief Ward admitted, these turns pose no serious safety problems on Saturdays and Sundays. The rest of the ordinance was adopted as introduced. A stop sign location was added on Dean Street headed west at the intersection of South Broad Street. Parking was prohibited at all times on the west side of Bogert Street from a point 248 feet south from East Glen Avenue to a point 568 feet from East Glen Avenue. Parking was also prohibited at certain hours on several streets. Whalen said that during some school events it would be impossible to get emergency vehicles through some streets. The ordinance aims to improve this potential hazard and bolster pedestrian safety. Parking was prohibited on the east side of Fairfield Avenue from 8 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. Monday through Friday from Sept. 1 to June 30 from a point 280 feet south of East Glen Avenue to a point 426 feet south of East Glen Avenue, and parking was prohibited on the west side of Bogert Avenue from 8 a.m. until 9 a.m. Monday through Friday from Sept. 1 through June 30 from East Glen Avenue to a point 248 feet south of the East Glen Avenue intersection. The ordinance prohibits stopping and standing on the south side of Downs Street from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. from Fairfield Avenue to Pearsall Avenue Monday through Friday from Sept. 1 to June 30; on both sides of Houston Lane from 8 a.m. until 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. from South Pleasant Avenue to Stevens Avenue Monday through Friday from Sept. 1 through June 30; and on the east side of North Hillside Place from West Ridgewood Avenue to Madison Place from 8 a.m. until 9 a.m. and from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday from Sept. 1 through June 30.
