Teens help rescue senior from Maple underpass
by John Koster Two Glen Rock teenagers are being applauded for their courage, quick thinking, and kind impulse in joining a volunteer firefighter in the rescue of a senior citizen from Fair Lawn who drove her car into the flooded trestle underpass on Maple Avenue in Glen Rock on Saturday, July 28. Glen Rock police received word that a vehicle was stuck in the three-foot pond beneath the trestle. The two boys, 14-year-old Mark Mifsud and 15-year-old Luke Kyriazis had seen the 81-year old woman trapped in the car and up to her neck in the water while seated in the car. The boys joined volunteer firefighter Thomas Pimlot in dragging her to safety. Mifsud said the water had been up to his waist when he went in, and that the woman had obviously experienced distress when her car sank. Pimlot acknowledged that the boys helped pull the woman to safety. When Police Sergeant Daniel Dour arrived, he found the woman safely
ensconced in the back seat of Pimlot’s car, and took her home in the police car. The woman’s car, which suffered water damage, was removed by All Points Towing after police called the towing company. The underpass frequently floods during and just after heavy rain. The area is marked by warning symbols showing the depth of the water on one side. In this case, the Glen Rock Police Department had marked the edge of the pond with road cones as a warning that the underpass was not negotiable.
Council approves signage contract
The Glen Rock Borough Council has approved a $62,000 signage contract for an illuminated four-row sign beside Rock Road and a number of smaller signs for doors and portals inside Glen Rock Borough Hall. The contract with Allied Environmental Signage, LLC was unanimously approved by resolution at the last council meeting. The only other bid was rejected due to an irregularity. The sign will be set up between the exit driveway to the borough hall parking lot and Harding Plaza, which runs past the bus stop and circles between borough hall and the Glen Rock Volunteer Ambulance Corps building. Mayor John van Keuren said the fourrow sign would allow Glen Rock authorities to spell out messages for pedestrians and motorists who use Rock Road, the entry to the borough’s central business district. Messages may be input locally. The internal signs are essentially a late stage of the reconstruction of borough hall and will help visitors find their way around the building. J. KOSTER

The DPW will provide them with two covered containers, one for cans and plastic bottles and one for paper and cardboard.
