Onomachi visitors
(continued from page 6) marshmallows, a novelty they enjoyed, the boys ventured back to the Glen Rock Municipal Pool for one last swim. On their second day in Glen Rock, the Japanese students toured the Glen Rock Public Library with Library Director Betsy Wald, where -- among other things -- they methodically completed all the jigsaw puzzles left on tables at the entrance foyer in next to no time. Two of the boys ventured back for Teen Game Night. “They didn’t speak much English, but they were good at playing Risk,” said Teen Librarian Jennifer Lemke. The Onomachi youngsters left early last week for a camp in New York State where they will learn about horseback riding, archery, and rock climbing before they return to Japan. Board of Education Member Minoru Suzuki offered thanks to the people of Glen Rock, and especially to long-time Glen Rock residents Kristin Stewart O’Brien, her husband Steve O’Brien, and the Stewart and O’Brien families, Nancy Spiller, Mary Jame Sirago, and Mayor John van Keuren for their cooperation in building a lifetime memory for the people from Onomachi. “It’s always great to have special visitors to Glen Rock and America and to remember that we have friends all over the world,” Mayor van Keuren said at the end of the picnic.
Heidi Wise, her dog Sugar, and America Kennel Club Judge Charles Marcantonio celebrate Sugar’s first place win in the AKC obedience competition. Sugar, an 11 1/2 year old Pomeranian, is trained and handled by Wise, president of Coddled Creatures Pet Sitting and Obedience Training LLC. Wise says Sugar is one of the only, if not the only, small dog trained, for AKC competition obedience using only positive reinforcement methods with a great emphasis on learning theory. Wise had been told by many that it could not be done with her methods, but she stuck to her beliefs and obtained first place without ever using any old school, methods such as prong or choke collars. Wise says her approach to competition training, is what she is most proud of because it sets an example that shows it can be done in a fun and humane way for both owner and dog. (Photo courtesy of M.
