Teen librarian hosts Hip Swing Hula Hoop Festival
by John Koster Glen Rock Teen Librarian Jennifer Lemke hosted a July Hip Swing Hula Hoop Festival at the library that kept 21 youngsters in a spin cycle. “I’m thinking of holding another one in August,” Lemke said last week. The youngsters, who signed up in advance as part of the Glen Rock Public Library’s extensive summer activities program, met downstairs in the group assembly room where they learned how to make hula hoops out of PVC tubing. Lemke made the cuts, and the youngsters used commercial hair dyers to bond the tips of the PVC tubing, added duct tape for customized decorations, and then adjourned from the cool basement room to the shady lawn to take the newly made hoops for a spin. Hula hoops were a fad in the 1950s -before any of the teens or the teen librarian were around to study the phenomenon in person -- but they seem to make a comeback every few years, and are said to be great exercise, not to mention a lot of fun if you can keep up with them.
