HILT schedules events Highlights in Leisure Time will meet Aug. 9 in the Ridgewood Library auditorium at 10 a.m. The program has been changed and will now feature a presentation by Mike Schinn from the Ridgewood Public Library on eBook and audiobook tech training. On Aug. 16, HILT will visit Mount Airy Casino Resort in Mount Pocono, Pennsylvania. The cost is $20 for members and $25 for non-members. A free buffet and $25 in slot play are included. Ridgewood residents, age 55 and older, are invited to join Highlights in Leisure Time, a senior organization under the auspices of the Ridgewood Department of Parks & Recreation. Monthly meetings include entertainment and/or informational presentations followed by refreshments. Annual dues are $15. Gallery presents ‘Serenity’ in August During the month of August, Artist Lynn Early will exhibit her latest pastel paintings at the Stable Art Gallery, 259 North Maple Avenue, in Ridgewood. Early’s works feature low horizon lines in order to emphasize the expanse of the sky. The artist is fond of the subtle freshness of both early morning and twilight, enjoys painting sky scenes, lightning, seascapes, and landscapes in a minimalist style. Miniature art and smaller works are part of her original
collection, which features pieces in acrylics, pastels, and metallic paints. Viewing hours are weekdays, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., or by appointment. Call (201) 670-5560. A reception with the artist is set for Friday, Aug. 24, between the hours of 7 and 9 p.m. All are welcome to attend. Before and After School Programs available Registration is now open for the YWCA of Bergen County’s Before and After School Programs for the 2012-13 school year. Programs for children in kindergarten through grade six combine guidance and security with activities designed to inspire creative thinking and individual expression. A $50 fee will be applied to applications received after Aug. 17, and there will be a registration freeze from Aug. 31 through Sept. 7. YWCA Before and After School Programs are offered at schools in the following Bergen County districts: Allendale, Cresskill, Dumont, Old Tappan, Oradell, Ridgewood, and Westwood. After kindergarten care is available in Oradell and Ridgewood. All programs are licensed by the State of New Jersey, Department of Children & Families. Swim team sets ‘early bird’ tryouts Tryouts for the Ridgewood YMCA Breakers competitive swim team will begin with “early bird” tryouts on Aug. 1 and 3 at the YMCA on Oak Street in Ridgewood. The Breakers Swim Team is for participants at all ability levels, and provides youths ages six and up the opportunity to acquire the skills, self-discipline, confidence, and physical conditioning they require to become the best swimmers they can be. The program includes instruction, training,
and competition. Pre-registration is not required. There is a $10 tryout fee. Additional tryouts times will be available from Sept. 4 through 6. For details, contact Bud Rimbault at (201) 444-5600, extension 319, or e-mail brimbault@ridgewoodymca.org. ‘Iolanthe’ auditions announced The Ridgewood Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company, which is currently celebrating its 75th Anniversary, has announced auditions for “Iolanthe.” Auditions for principal roles and chorus will be held on Thursday, Aug. 9 and Monday, Aug. 13 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Community Church of Glen Rock, 354 Rock Road in Glen Rock. Performers should be prepared to sing a song from the show or a piece that best shows their vocal quality. Those who will not be singing a piece from “Iolanthe” are reminded to bring their music.
