April 25, 2012 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 19 Ridgewood Notes Candidates Night to be televised The League of Women Voters will host an April 30 Candidates Night for those running for the Ridgewood Council. The 7:30 p.m. program will be held at Ridgewood Village Hall, 131 North Maple Avenue, and will be televised by Cablevision (Channel 77) and Fios (Channel 34). This year, six candidates, including incumbents Keith Killion and Paul Aronsohn, and challengers Russell Forenza, Gwenn Hauck, Albert Pucciarelli, and Mary Jan Shinozuka, will be vying for three seats on the village council. The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan organization that encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in government. As part of its voter services, the league registers new voters and organizes forums for candidates whenever there is a contested election. Italian Festival planned The Men’s Fellowship of Emmanuel Baptist Church, located at 14 Hope Street in Ridgewood, will sponsor an Italian Festival on May 5 at 5:30 p.m. The menu will feature traditional Italian food and desserts. OPRC offers handbells program The Women’s Guild at Ridgewood’s Old Paramus Reformed Church will host “A View from the Belfry,” featuring an ensemble of handbell ringers from West Side Presbyterian Church, on Wednesday, May 9. The 1:15 p.m. program will be directed by Deborah Holden-Holloway, associate music director at West Side Presbyterian. Summer camp information available YWCA Bergen County will host a series of Open Houses for families who want to learn more about available summer camps. The program is entitled “Y the W Makes a Difference.” The YWCA’s Camp Ma-Kee-Ya, which has relocated to Darlington County Park in Mahwah, will hold an on-site Open House on Saturday, May 20 from noon to 3 p.m. Parents and kids are invited to enjoy refreshments and activities, meet camp staff, and have their questions answered. The camp is located in the Upper Lake Area of the park at 600 Darlington Avenue. Camp staff will be available at the YWCA’s facility at 112 Oak Street in Ridgewood, on May 2 and 22 from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m., and on May 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The YWCA runs four affordable day camps for children ages three to 12: Small Fry Camp in Ridgewood; Camp Orinda in Dumont; Camp Y-Oak-A in Saddle River; and Camp Ma-Kee-Ya. All YW camps offer American Red Cross Swim lessons, sports, arts and crafts, nature activities, and more. CIT (counselor in training) programs for boys and girls ages 13 to 16 are also available. Parlance to host Gunns The Parlance Chamber Concerts will host baritone Nathan Gunn and pianist Julie Gunn on Sunday, April 29. The 4 p.m. program will be held at the West Side Presbyterian Church, 6 South Monroe Street in Ridgewood. The musical couple will perform some of their favorite songs, including Schumann’s “Dichterliebe,” songs by Samuel Barber and Harold Arlen, and traditional America songs arranged by Julie Gunn. Nathan Gunn has made a reputation as one of the most in-demand singers of the day. His down-to-earth charm and resonant baritone radiate on opera and concert stages from the Met to Covent Garden to the Hollywood Bowl. Julie Gunn is a critically praised pianist, composer, and arranger. She and Nathan met in college and have become partners on and off the stage. HILT plans May events Highlights in Leisure Time will meet May 10 in the auditorium of the Ridgewood Library, 125 North Maple Avenue in Ridgewood. The group will meet at 10 a.m. The featured speaker will be photographer Douglas Goodell. A retired research scientist, Goodell has been involved with photography as a sideline for many years. Upon retirement, he became very active and concentrated his efforts on wildlife and birds in particular. His talk will concentrate on the exquisite beauty found in the birds and wildlife in Costa Rica. Graydon Pool membership badges for seniors will be available for purchase at the meeting. The cost is $20 and may be paid for by check or cash. Proof of residency is required. On May 31, HILT members will travel to the New York Botanical Gardens for the “Monet’s Gardens: Impressions of Giverny” exhibit. Activities will include a private, docent-led garden highlights tram tour followed by a gourmet bag lunch by caterer Abigail Kirsch at the historic Snuff Mill. Ridgewood residents, age 55 and up, are invited to join HILT, a senior organization under the auspices of the Ridgewood Department of Parks and Recreation. Monthly meetings include entertainment and/or informational presentations, followed by refreshments. Annual membership dues are $15. RSO to feature flute virtuoso The Ridgewood Symphony Orchestra will conclude the 2011-12 season with a concert featuring Argentinean flute virtuoso Claudio Barile in a performance of the “Concerto for Flute and Orchestra” by Khachaturian. The concert will take place May 4 at 8 p.m. at West Side Presbyterian Church in Ridgewood. The church, which is located at 6 South Monroe Street (on the corner of West Ridgewood Avenue) is the new venue for the Ridgewood Symphony’s concerts. Advance general admission tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors, and $10 for students. At the door, ticket prices will be $23, $18, and $13. The May 4 program will include Haydn’s “Drum Roll” Symphony No. 103 and Ippolitov-Ivanov’s “Caucasian Sketches Suite.” The RSO is among the largest volunteer symphonies in the country, with players from 48 different municipalities in Bergen, Passaic, and Rockland counties. The orchestra is directed by Arkady Leytush.
