Six members and two coaches from the Team Campgaw Snowboard Race Team recently attended the 2012 USASA Snowboarding Nationals at Copper Mountain in Colorado. The Campgaw snowboarding coaches are Tony Rinaldi of Dumont and Dave Hirschberg of Oradell. Team members who attended the National Championships are Jamie Davidson of Woodland Park, Carlie Capela of Ramsey, Garret Capela of Ramsey, Matt Morgan of Mahwah, Ed Chanod of Ridgewood, and Ania Werocsy of Upper Saddle River. Chanod took first place and received a gold medal in Giant Slalom Alpine Race for 8-9 year olds and a silver medal in Slalom Alpine Race for 8-9 year olds. Hirschberg took home a silver medal for coming in second in the Legend Men Series Giant Slalom Alpine event. All of the racers beat their personal goals competing against the best riders from all over the country.
Campgaw snowboarders excel at national event

At right: Ed ‘Shred’ Chanod, 9, in action. He competed against the top 30 boys in his age group from across the country to win his title in Giant Slalom and silver in the slalom. Chanod qualified for the national championship by accruing points through regional competitions in the Catskill Mountain Series, where he also took the championship titles in both disciplines. A third grader at Travell School in Ridgewood, Chanod has been snowboarding since he was five. He is also a member of the Ridgewood Travel Baseball team and plays football.
