Arboretum sets events for Earth Day and beyond
Friends of the Glen Rock Arboretum will celebrate Earth Day, Saturday, April 28, with free tours of the arboretum’s wooded wetlands. Tours are scheduled at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. and will be led by experienced, knowledgeable docents. The tours run about 45 to 60 minutes. The arboretum is located at 460 Doremus Avenue. Visitors will have an opportunity to plant a seedling tree in the woods to ensure that these important wooded wetlands will be here for future generations. The seedlings have been nurtured in the arboretum nursery. On April 29 at 1:30 p.m., Daphne Boss Ayalon will discuss the art of shrub pruning. This special guest is the owner of a garden consulting business, a Master Gardener, and a graduate of numerous horticultural courses at New York Botanical Gardens. She has also lectured at the Haworth Shade Tree Commission for the Department of Environmental Commission. She will demonstrate pruning techniques for various shrubs, explain why timing of this task is so important for beautiful and healthy shrubbery, and demonstrate how careful pruning can bring new vigor to shrubs and bushes. The cost to attend the seminar is $8; $5 for arboretum members, seniors, and students.
Seminars and workshops planned for May and June will include: tree identification, poison ivy identification, Colonial and historic plants and crafts, artifacts and foraging, aromatherapy, container planting, herbs, and making a tussie-mussie, and rain gardens and rain barrels.
