Bicycle safety seminar scheduled for April 21
by John Koster
The Glen Rock Environmental Commission, the Glen Rock Activities Club, and Carrera Cycles at 235 Rock Road will jointly run a bicycle safety seminar from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Borough
Hall NJ Transit Train Station East Parking Lot on April 21. This event is part of the GREC’s Safe Routes to School initiative. “Riding a bike is a rite of passage for many kids,” said Sandy Chapman, the event coordinator for the Glen Rock
Environmental Commission. “This skills clinic will let the kids learn and practice skills essential to keep them safe and cycling for life. It’s also a great way for kids to prepare for the spring Bike/Walk to School Day, which will be held the following week on Thursday, April 26.” During the seminar, youngsters from the ages of eight to 11 will receive training from League Cycling Instructor Jen Laurita and volunteers from the Glen Rock Activities Club. The bicycle skills event will help to build the children’s traffic safety knowledge and allow them to practice skills and problem solving through a series of enjoyable hands-on activities. An activities table for younger children who want to make posters and helmet sticker designs will also be included.
“I’m delighted to support this event because I believe that bicycling is a wonderful family activity and a great form of exercise,” said Juan Mejia, owner of Carrera Cycles and a co-sponsor of the event. He will help fit safety helmets and teach the youngsters about proper bike maintenance. Pre-registration is advised. There is no charge, but each participant must bring a working bicycle and a safety helmet to the event. Register in person at Carrera Cycles or by e-mail at grec@glenrocknj. net. Those registering are asked to provide the names, ages, and number of participating children. Registrants should also include the names of the participants’ parents or guardians, and a contact phone number and e-mail address.
