Meditation & Contemplation slated The Ridgewood United Methodist Church will offer a Good Friday Meditation and Contemplation program featuring musician Richard Locker on Friday, April 6 at 7:30 p.m. A consummate stylist and instrumentalist, Locker is one of New York’s top musicians. He has performed in over 4,000 recording sessions with diverse artists, including Leonard Bernstein, Pinchas Zuckerman, James Galway, Wynton Marsalis, McCoy Tyner, and Elvis Costello, and his work is featured in more than 150 film scores. Locker will present “Movements of Suites for the Unaccompanied Cello” by J. S. Bach. His music will punctuate the dramatic reading of “The Passion of our Lord,” Matthew 26:1-27:62, by Lisa Frenz. The service also features the Chancel Choir accompanied and directed by Randall Svane. The church is located at 100 Dayton Street. ‘Island in the Sun’ at gallery During the month of April, the Stable Art Gallery will be presenting “Island in the Sun,” paintings by Johanna Salomon and Hella Bergel. Salomon and Bergel’s featured paintings were inspired by the beauty of Saint Thomas. Portraying different viewpoints and styles in their interpretation of the tropical island’s native culture and beauty, Salomon focuses on local island families and customs, while Bergel depicts landscapes and the tranquil beauty of the beaches. Salomon studied at Art Students League and Bergen Community College. She has taught painting throughout northern New Jersey. She has exhibited her work in several states for the past 20 years. President of Painting Affiliates of the Art Center of Northern New Jersey, Salomon is also a member of Salute to Women in the Arts, Pascack Art Association, and the Ridgewood Art Council. Bergel has studied oil painting, watercolor, and sketching
at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, Ridgewood Art Institute, and the Art Center of Northern New Jersey. MOMs to hear ‘Mary the Mother’ Madeline Kelley will present “Mary the Mother” at the Our Lady of Mount Carmel R.C. Church MOMs meeting on Wednesday, April 4 at 9:15 a.m. Kelly will offer a portrait of Mary through the lens of scripture and invite attendees to step back 2,000 years and walk in Mary’s footsteps; see how she lived, loved, and trusted. Learn T’ai Chi Chih The Health Ministry at Ridgewood’s Old Paramus Church will offer an eight-week T’ai Chi Chih course beginning April 16. Certified instructor Bill Moore will teach a series of 19 gentle movements and postures noted for their benefits. Members of the community are welcome. The cost of the class is $40. West Side marks Holy Week West Side Presbyterian Church, located at 6 South Monroe Street in Ridgewood, will host services in preparation for Easter. A Communion Service with the senior high choir will be held on Maundy Thursday, April 5, at 7:30 p.m. On Good Friday, April 6, there will be a prayer service at 1 p.m. in the chapel. A harp and flute prelude at 7:45 p.m. will usher in the 8 p.m. service of Tenebrae, which includes the chancel and youth choirs, readers, and instru-
mentalists. On Easter Sunday, April 8, services will be held at 9 and 11:15 a.m. The services will feature the chancel and senior high choirs, a brass ensemble, and the Westminster Bell Choir. Orpheus Club plans spring concert The Orpheus Club Men’s Chorus will present its annual spring concert April 21 and 22 at the United Methodist Church of Ridgewood, 100 Dayton Street in Ridgewood. Classics, seasonal tunes, Broadway melodies, and choral favorites are on the program, which will also feature the Zephyr Vocal Ensemble, an a cappella group from Vernon. Founded in 1909, the Orpheus Club is one of the oldest musical groups in New Jersey. The club has performed regularly for more than 102 years. Tickets for the concert are $10 in advance and $15 at the door and are available at Daily Treat restaurant and Town and Country Apothecary in Ridgewood; Lewis Drug in Westwood; Perry’s Florist and Rock Ridge Pharmacy in Glen Rock; Wine and Spirit World in Ho-Ho-Kus; Benny’s Luncheonette in Fair Lawn; and Soloist Music in Leonia.
