Regional board approves administrators’ contract

McMahon The Ramapo Indian Hills Board of Education recently approved a contract agreement with the Ramapo Hills Administrators Association, which includes the district’s two principals and four assistant principals. The contract covers the 2010-11 through the 2012-13 school years, according to Frank Ceurvels, the regional school district’s business administrator. The contract provides for a 3.4 percent salary increase for the administrators in the first year; a 2.5 percent increase plus a $1,500 stipend for 2011-12; and a 2.5 percent increase for 2012-13. Ceurvels advised that the administrators can also earn up to an additional two percent salary increase in the third year based on performance, and, as part of the new contract, the association agreed to a less costly medical insurance package. Under this contract, the salary levels of the district’s administrators for 2010-11 were: Al Evangelista, principal of Indian Hills High School, $162,524; Louis Moore, principal of Ramapo High School, $147,130 plus a doctorate stipend of $4,000; Lorenzo Baratta, who was assistant principal of Indian Hills High School for 2010-11, $110,327; Joe Collins, assistant principal Indian Hills High School, $140,100; Troy Lederman, assistant principal of Ramapo High School, who is no longer employed by the district, $115,500; and Linda Sisto, assistant principal of Ramapo

The Poe program will begin on Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. Dr. John Gruesser of Kean University will present a lecture, followed by a one-man performance of selected Poe stories by actor/director Tony Tsendeas. Registration is recommended. “Steampunk Poe,” a teen book discussion group will be offered on Oct. 3 at 5 p.m. with Teen Librarian Barbara Weber. “Steampunk” is a literary and fashion statement movement inspired by 19th century science fiction from the era of Poe and of Jules Verne. Dr. Harold Schechter a professor of literature at Queens College in New York City, is the author of four novels that feature Poe as a character. His lecture, “My Poe Mysteries,” will be offered at 7 p.m. on Oct. 4, and he will explain
his insights into Poe’s mind as expressed in his own historical fiction. A double feature will be presented at 7 p.m. on Oct. 5. This evening’s event will include a screening of the 2012 movie “The Woman in Black” staring Daniel Radcliff, and a dramatic reading of “The Fall of the House of Usher,” introduced by Professor Edward Shannon of Ramapo College. The Starry Night Orchestra will present “Concert for Edgar” on Oct. 7 at 3 p.m. at the Wyckoff Library. This musical ensemble is based at Ackerman’s Music Center in Wyckoff. Tickets are $5 and will be sold at the door. On Oct. 11 at 7 p.m., take a Graveyard Tour of the Wyckoff Reformed Church, which was constructed three years before Poe was born. Guides from the Wyckoff Historical Society will lead participants through the graveyard and the crypt. The man they called The Raven will walk among them and read from his works. The Wyckoff Public Library is located at 200 Woodland Avenue in Wyckoff. Details about additional programs will be released shortly.

For 2011-12, those salaries were: Evangelista, $164,500 plus an administrative stipend of $1,500; Moore, $147,130 plus a doctorate stipend of $4,000; Collins, $143,500 plus an administrative stipend of $1,500; Lederman, $132,500 (pro-rated) plus an administrative stipend of $1,500; and Sisto, $143,500 plus an administrative stipend of $1,500. In addition, the pro-rated salary for Claudia Dargento, assistant principal at Ramapo, was set at $112,700 plus an administrative stipend of $1,500, while the pro-rated salary for Daniel VanderMolen, assistant principal at Ramapo, was set at $108,100 plus an administrative stipend of $1,500. The increases for these past two years will be retroactive and the salaries for the administrators was increased for 2012-13 school year as follows: Evangelista, $168,613; Moore, $147,130 plus a doctorate stipend of $4,000; Collins, $147,088; Dargento, $115,518; Sisto, $147,088; and VanderMolen, $110,803. The educational administration is expected to direct, coordinate, and supervise pupils and staff in their efforts to reach the goals and objectives that are adopted by the school board. Within the guidelines of board policy, negotiated agreements, and New Jersey law, the school board expects the educational administration to provide up-todate information and sound professional advice to the board as an aid to informed decision making. Administrators are also expected to plan, organize, implement, and evaluate the educational programs established by board policy in order to provide excellent educational opportunities to the pupils, provide those excellent educational opportunities in a fiscally responsible manner, and use efficient administrative and management procedures, including supervision and evaluation of teaching staff. In addition, administrators are expected to keep the board informed of all new legislative actions or changes in code and statutes that affect the policies, programs, or operations of the school district.
