September 19, 2012 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • Page 21 Franklin Lakes Scribe Town to celebrate 90th Anniversary at fair The Borough of Franklin Lakes will celebrate its 90th birthday at the 2012 Franklin Lakes Town Fair on Friday, Sept. 21 and Saturday, Sept. 22. Festivities will be held in front of borough hall on DeKorte Drive. The fair will open on Sept. 21 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., with over a dozen carnival rides and booths. The event will continue on Sept. 22 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. (Rain date: Sept. 23.) Live bands will provide entertainment all day on Saturday. Library goes to the fair Look for the Franklin Lakes Library’s booth at the Franklin Lakes Town Fair on DeKorte Drive on Saturday, Sept. 22. The booth will open at 11 a.m. The library’s booth will feature Mad Hatters Balloon Sculptures between 1 and 4 p.m., and caricature artist Gina Minichino between 1:30 and 4:30 p.m. Drop in craft program offered The Franklin Lakes Public Library invites children ages three and older with a parent or caregiver to drop by and made a craft. The Crafts to Go program will be held on the following Fridays between 2 and 5 p.m.: Sept. 21 and 28, Oct. 5 and 12, and Nov. 2 and 9. Registration is not required for this program. Churches unite with special service, dinner The Presbytery of the Palisades, the Presbyterian Church at Franklin Lakes, and the First Presbyterian Church of North Haledon invite the public to a special service of worship and celebration establishing a new congregation. At the service, Reverend Louis A. Kilgore will be elected as pastor of the High Mountain Presbyterian Church based at 730 Franklin Lake Road in Franklin Lakes. Club hosts Candidates Forum The Franklin Lakes Republican Club will host its annual Candidates Forum on Monday, Oct. 1 at the Ambulance Corps Building on Bender Court. The 7:45 p.m. program will feature New Jersey Senator Joseph Kyrillos and Bergen County Freeholder candidates Robert Hermansen and Margaret “Peg” Watkins. Club members and area residents who are interested in meeting the candidates and hearing about key campaign issues are invited to attend. Light refreshments will be served. The Franklin Lakes Republican Club is a non-profit organization established to represent the Republican Party in Franklin Lakes. The “Taste of Franklin Lakes” event will begin at 6 p.m. and will feature hors d’oeuvres and desserts from local venues. The rock band, StarFish, will perform at 7 p.m. This Family Special program is free, but tickets are required for the performance. Tickets may be obtained in advance at the library during regular hours or by calling (201) 891-2224. This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Franklin Lakes Library. The program will be held on Tuesdays or Thursdays at the VFW Hall at Franklin and Pulis avenues in Franklin Lakes. The Tuesday workshop will begin Sept. 18, and the Thursday session will begin Sept. 20. Classes meet from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Tuition is $104. New students will receive a 19-page syllabus. Library announces events The Franklin Lakes Library has announced upcoming events for adults. All are welcome to these free programs. Jean Herron and Maria Rini of Posse Partners, LLC will present home staging tips in “Get it Sold!” on Tuesday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. Learn the techniques and guidelines for preparing to sell your home. Participants are invited to come with questions. Lorraine Matys will present “Vietnam: Ancient and Modern” on Thursday, Sept. 20. The program will begin at 7 p.m. and will feature the history, culture, and environmental beauty of Vietnam. On Sept. 25, Nancy Ellson from Holy Name Hospital will present “What Are the Two Keys to Successful Aging?” Ellson will share information about how to enhance life through healthy eating and proper exercise. Attendees of all ages are welcome. This program will begin at 7 p.m. “Take Control of Your Finances” will be presented Sept. 27, when Elaine Tirrito and Pat Maksoud of Family Finances, Primerica, will discuss personal and family finances. Exhibit features work of Fran Mollett The Presbyterian Church at Franklin Lakes will feature the work of artist Fran Mollett during the month of September. Her exhibit, “Little Ones to HIM Belong” will display her miniature portraits of children and pets. Mollett, who is also an art teacher and art therapist, studied at Mercer County Community College and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. She has been accepted into many juried art exhibits with the Mercer County Artists, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Trenton Makes, and the Monmouth Museum. Spina to exhibit paintings The Franklin Lakes Public Library will present an exhibit of paintings by Lou Spina during the month of September. Spina began his career as a commercial artist, and worked for several years as an art director before heading his own design firm. Trained at the School of Industrial Art, now known as The High School of Art & Design, and New York City University, he received the Portfolio of Excellence Award. He also attended The School of Visual Arts and studied fine art at The Art Students League. Presently, Spina is vice president of the Pascack Art Association, a board member of the Art Center of NNJ, and a member of the American Artists Professional League and the Monmouth Museum.
