School sets Military Bridge Night Wyckoff’s Sicomac School will host a Military Bridge Night on Wednesday, Nov. 14 at Ramapo High School, 331 George Street in Franklin Lakes. The evening will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will include basket prizes, a cash prize contest, food, and military bridge. Attendees need not know how to play. The cost is $5 per player. On Oct. 30, Poe scholar and award-winning author Dr. Dawn B. Sova will present a wry feminist interpretation of “Poe’s Warrior Women and Their Melancholy Men” at the library at 7 p.m. On Nov. 2 at 7 p.m., a double feature will deal with Poe’s fascination with the horror genre. This evening event will include the Alfred Hitchcock feature film “Spellbound” starring Gregory Peck and Ingrid Bergman, and Professor Edward Shannon’s dramatic reading of “William Wilson.” On Nov. 3, at 7 p.m., the Student Film Festival will present the Edgar Allan Poe Project. Area teens are invited to submit short films inspired by Poe’s life or work. A panel of judges will select the winners, and the best entries will be screened Nov. 3. This is a collaborative project with Great Heights Performing Arts Labs. The finale will take place on Friday, Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m. at the library, which will be the scene of the dastardly murder of Frederick Raven, an eccentric member of the Edgar Allan Poe Society. Patrons will interact with a suspicious cast of char-
acters from Kathy Reed Productions in a play prepared exclusively for the Wyckoff Library. Tickets are $5, and must be purchased in advance. Children in fifth grade and younger will not be permitted due to the analytical and adult nature of the play. The Wyckoff Library is located at 200 Woodland Avenue in Wyckoff. Holiday Fair set The Wyckoff Reformed Church, located at 580 Wyckoff Avenue, will hold its annual Holiday Fair on Saturday, Nov. 17. The fair, which will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., will feature handmade items, consignment shopping, gifts, attic treasures, books, and CDs, gift baskets for all occasions. Those who attend may also purchase homemade desserts, soups, and breads, and stay for lunch. At 1 p.m., there will be an opportunity for attendees to bid on vacation home stays, sporting event tickets, gift certificates, donations from local businesses, and more. Prize baskets will also be available. Events for children will include games and a photos with Santa. Seniors plan events, seek members The Wyckoff Seniors group meets at 11:15 a.m. on Tuesdays at the Larkin House at 380 Godwin Avenue in Wyckoff. On Nov. 15, the group will visit the Thayer Hotel in West Point for a buffet lunch and show. The seniors will also travel to the Fiesta in Wood Ridge for lunch and a Christmas Show. Temple presents ‘Food for Thought’ Temple Beth Rishon, located at 585 Russell Avenue in Wyckoff, welcomes the community to its Food for Thought Distinguished Speaker Series sponsored by the Fred Emert Memorial Adult Education Fund. The program, featuring Dr. Rachel Korazim, will take place on Sunday, Nov. 4 at 9:45 a.m. Dr. Korzim, a freelance education consultant on curriculum development for Israel, has been involved with Jewish edu-
cation worldwide, counseling, teaching and creating educational materials. She will present “Connections to the Land: Windows into Israeli Society through Literature.” The cost to attend is $15 for temple members and $20 for non-members. A breakfast buffet is included. Zumba Glow Party benefit set Join the Wyckoff Y’s Zumba instructors on Nov. 16 for a fun-filled class that will set off an inner glow. The party will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m., and black lights and glow in the dark accents will add to the atmosphere. All are welcome. Moms lecture series announced The Wyckoff Family YMCA will present a series of informative lectures for mothers at the Y’s Lake House, 691 Wyckoff Avenue in Wyckoff. The programs begin at 11 a.m. and are open to all. The fee is $5,

On Monday, Nov. 5, Kathy Smolen, RN, community health nurse at The Valley Hospital, will discuss “Children’s Immunizations and Illnesses.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has identified immunization as the most important public health advancement of the 20th century. Come learn about the latest immunizations available for children. Lisa Nalven, MA, MD, neurodevelopmental pediatrician, Kireker Center for Child Development of The Valley Hospital, will present “Getting a Handle on ADHD” on Wednesday, Nov. 7. Children with Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder have trouble concentrating, controlling their behavior, planning ahead, or sitting still for more than a few minutes; however, they can learn to adapt and live a productive life. Learn about the diagnosis and treatment, and the home, school, and social issues children may face. On Wednesday, Dec. 5, Irena Ventura, manager of the Emotional Well-Being Initiative of the Partnership for Maternal and Child Health of Northern New Jersey, will present a program about postpartum depression. Healthy feelings between mother and baby are important for the baby’s growth and the happiness of women. Learn about the important role reproductive hormones have on a mother’s emotional wellbeing, what to look out for, tips on self-care for busy moms, and how to create a support network. Learn about “Eating Healthy Amid the Chaos” on Monday, Dec. 10. The Y’s inhouse registered dietician, Nancy Cooper, RD, will present tips on dealing with eating on the run, picky eaters, and making fast, healthy meals kids will eat.
