Midland Park
Symbol of remembrance brings the community together
Nearly 200 residents turned out to witness the dedication ceremony of the Midland Park Volunteer Fire Department’s memorial to the men and women who died in the World Trade Center attack on Sept. 11, 2001. Pictured clockwise, from bottom left: Piper Ray Adametz playing Amazing Grace; Mayor Patrick “Bud” O’Hagan addressing guests; Fire Chief Mark Berninger, who spearheaded the project, flanked by fire department chaplain, Rev. Rod Gorter of Midland Park Christian Reformed Church, who provided the thought-provoking reflections; a somber audience; soloist Samantha Shaffer. The focus of the new memorial complex is the 2,800-lb, 80 in. by 30 in. by 20 in. steel beam section from the World Trade Center raised to a height of 9 ft. 11 in. and angled southeast towards the World Trade Center. The complex incorporates the gong memorial and trees planted in memory of deceased firefighters. More than 50 local contractors, businesses and fire department members contributed free labor and equipment for the project.
