Young Lincoln loses his mom to a gang of vampires, but not until she instills a seed that will define Lincoln’s greatness: “Until everyone is free, we are all slaves.” When he is schooled in the skills of vampire hunting by the refined Henry (Dominic Cooper), he moves to Springfield, Illinois to begin a new life. He works in a store and studies law by day, and slays vampires by night, using an ax as his weapon of choice. Director Timur Bekmambetov is long on action, short on logic, content to feature a tall ax-wielding avenger in one bloody encounter after another. Benjamin Walker is a fairly undistinguished Lincoln, despite his reimagining as a 19th century action hero. Extras on the three-disc Bluray 3D and two-disc Blu-ray editions include a four-part making-of featurette, “The Great Calamity” graphic novel, the music video “Powerless,” and an examination of director Bekmambetov’s visual style.
