‘Magic Mike’
(continued from Restaurant page) Penalty” (1920) is not as well known as Chaney’s “Phantom of the Opera” or “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” it is a gripping gangster saga about obsession with a superb performance by “The Man of a Thousand Faces.” With a new musical score, the Blu-ray edition contains a video tour of Chaney’s makeup case and double-amputee costume, surviving footage of Chaney’s “The Miracle Man,” “By the Sun’s Rays” -- Chaney’s 1914 one-reel Western, and trailers from two other Chaney pictures. “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” (20th CenturyFox Home Entertainment) informs viewers of something we never learned in history class: Our 16th president led
a secret life as a violent, determined vampire annihilator. Young Lincoln loses his mom to a gang of vampires, but not until she instills a seed that will define Lincoln’s greatness: “Until everyone is free, we are all slaves.” When he is schooled in the skills of vampire hunting by the refined Henry (Dominic Cooper), he moves to Springfield, Illinois to begin a new life. He works in a store and studies law by day, and slays vampires by night, using an ax as his weapon of choice. Director Timur Bekmambetov is long on action, short on logic, content to feature a tall ax-wielding avenger in one bloody encounter after another. Benjamin Walker is a fairly undistinguished Lincoln, despite his reimagining as a 19th century action hero. Extras on the three-disc Bluray 3D and two-disc Blu-ray editions include a four-part making-of featurette, “The Great Calamity” graphic novel, the music video “Powerless,” and an examination of director Bekmambetov’s visual style.
